AOC and her “Squad” have made waves in Washington, D.C. over the years. But it’s all been for the wrong reasons.
And Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez may be facing massive consequences after violating this one rule.
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is in hot water.
She’s currently engaged to a Mr. Riley Roberts, but as of this year, she referred to him as her “spouse” when submitting disclosure forms.
According to the House Ethics Manual, AOC must be legally married to Roberts in order to claim him as her “spouse” on the forms.
But since she did list him as a spouse, she’s required to also list Roberts’ financial information.
“If Rep. Ocasio-Cortez is going to refer to Mr. Roberts as her spouse in the context of one kind of ethics disclosure, it would be logical and consistent for her to do so in the context of all ethics disclosures, including annual financial disclosures and periodic transaction reports,” Project on Government Oversight senior manager, Dylan Hedtler-Gaudette said.
AOC could also be facing a hefty fine of up to $50,000 or even five years in prison for putting false information in her disclosure forms.
Roberts also doesn’t have assets or stocks reported in Ocasio-Cortez’s disclosure forms, which is an ethical red flag in itself.
“If they were married then she would be required to disclose his finances on her 2022 financial disclosure. There is no exception to this rule,” Kendra Arnold, the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust’s executive director, said.
What makes this scandal worse for AOC, is the that she’s a strong believer that Congress members and their husbands and wives shouldn’t own stocks. This is something she’s advocated through proposed legislation.
She also is attempting to launch an investigation into conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas for allegedly receiving gifts and not reporting them.
So to fail to report her alleged “spouse’s” financials only makes the Congresswoman look hypocritical.
But AOC is no stranger to acting like one.
In 2021, she attended the Met Gala – where tickets are upwards of $30,000 each – wearing a pricey dress that said “Tax the Rich.”
Along with the dress, was a $2,000 handbag that also displayed the same socialist message.
This caused an ethical dilemma for AOC as she’s been accused of receiving an improper gift by accepting the dress and handbag from the designer who made them.
Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez’s “rules for thee but not for me” attitude has angered Americans in the past.
But this time, it might finally catch up with her.
