The Democratic National Committee keeps getting in their own way. They’re doing nothing to help their party succeed.
And DNC headquarters exploded after making a decision that will haunt them for years to come.
David Hogg Joins DNC Leadership Amid Controversy
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has appointed Leftist activist David Hogg to one of its top leadership positions, a decision that has sparked a wave of reactions across the political spectrum.
DNC members selected Hogg as vice chair, alongside Artie Blanco and Malcolm Kenyatta, this past weekend. Additionally, Ken Martin, a leader of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, was elected as the committee’s new chairman.
Hogg rose to national prominence as a gun control advocate following the tragic 2018 Parkland high school shooting in Florida, which claimed 17 lives. Since then, he has been an outspoken figure in political activism, often making headlines for his controversial remarks.
His bid for the vice chair position was endorsed by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who was Kamala Harris’s running mate in the 2024 presidential election.
A History of Controversial Statements
Hogg’s tenure in the public eye has been marked by a series of contentious statements.
As The Daily Wire reported: “Hogg has a history of outlandish statements and self-promotion; in June 2022, he accused Florida GOP Sen. Marco Rubio of avoiding him because Hogg ‘triggered’ him, writing in a later-deleted tweet, ‘Rubio staff said I can’t meet with him or his staff because I ‘trigger’ him. I just wanna have a conversation. Please meet with me @marcorubio I just want to figure out how we can stop these things from happening. We have to end the continuous debate and find what we can agree on.'”
Rubio’s Chief of Staff, Michael Needham, swiftly refuted Hogg’s claim, responding, “No one said such a thing. As for the meeting, you must be confused as we had a 2p meeting scheduled with you. However, since you are lying and clearly using this all for self-promotion, that meeting is now cancelled [sic]. … the reporter doing a profile of you knows the meeting is real since she was emailing yesterday with our comms team about it. Don’t lie again — we have receipts.”
In August 2018, Hogg asserted that the “NRA is pulling strings to increase gun sales in a record low year,” a claim that was quickly fact-checked by CNN contributor Stephen Gutowski. “There have been about 1 million more FBI background checks, the most reliable indicator of gun sales, this year than last year and this year is on pace to be the second-best in the history of NICS. So, no, gun sales are not experiencing a record low year,” Gutowski said in a post on social media in response to Hogg’s claim.
Two years later, in September 2020, Hogg made another controversial statement: “The use of violence to acquire political power is deeply rooted in imperialism, capitalism and white supremacy[.] I personally refuse to believe that the use of this same violence will ever create nonviolent systems of government that represent and support everyone.”
While he later apologized, he added, “Let me be clear what I am NOT trying to do is tell BIPOC people how they should react to violence directed at them by the state. It’s not my place or any white persons to direct or criticize the way BIPOC people choose to defend themselves against this violence from the state.”
Questions Surrounding Hogg’s Rise
Hogg’s acceptance into Harvard University also raised eyebrows, as he was admitted despite scoring only 1270 on his SATs—well below the 1460 average for the bottom 25% of admitted students, according to Business Insider.
Following his election as DNC vice chair, critics were quick to highlight his track record.
“DNC Vice Chair David Hogg has some legitimately INSANE views that are wildly out of step with the American people,” said Steve Guest, a conservative communicator. “Good to see that the Democrat Party has learned absolutely nothing.”
As Hogg steps into his new role, his supporters celebrate his activism, while his critics question whether his controversial past will hinder the DNC’s efforts to connect with a broader electorate.
