The 2026 midterms will be here before you know it. That’s why Trump is being proactive.
And President Trump has finally broken his silence on this critical midterm election race.
Lara Trump Eyed as Top Pick for North Carolina Senate Seat in 2026
President Donald Trump has named his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, as his preferred candidate to succeed retiring Republican Senator Thom Tillis in North Carolina’s 2026 Senate race. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Tuesday, Trump praised Lara’s deep ties to the state and her impressive track record, positioning her as a strong contender for the role.
”Somebody that would really be great is Lara, she grew up there,” Trump said, highlighting her roots in Wilmington, North Carolina. However, he noted a potential hurdle: Lara and her husband, Eric Trump, currently “live in Florida” with their two children.
Despite this, the president emphasized her familiarity with the Tar Heel State, stating, “Her parents are there, you know, she really knows North Carolina well.”

Lara, 42, a North Carolina State University alumna, has built a notable public profile. She served as co-chair of the Republican National Committee during Trump’s remarkable 2024 presidential campaign, which culminated in a landslide victory.
Beyond politics, Lara hosts “My View with Lara Trump” on Fox News, a program the president described as “like the number one show.” Reflecting on her accomplishments, Trump added, “She’s done well. She’s a great person. Lara Trump. I mean that would always be my first choice, but she doesn’t live there now – but she’s there all the time.”
While Lara resides in Jupiter, Florida, the U.S. Constitution only requires senators to live in the state they represent at the time of the election. According to Charlotte-based WCNC, Lara would need to relocate to North Carolina by September 2026 in order to adhere to the state’s 90-day party affiliation requirement for candidates.
Senator Tillis, who has represented North Carolina in the Senate since 2015, announced on Sunday that he would not seek re-election in 2026. His decision followed a vote against advancing the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
Thom Tillis routinely fought to increase American intervention abroad while rejecting border security at home. He has also been a chief obstacle to the timely confirmation of President Trump’s nominees.

The open seat has already drawn attention, with President Trump noting that at least one North Carolina House representative is likely to pursue it.
Lara addressed the buzz surrounding her potential candidacy on her Fox News show the same day Tillis made his announcement:
“A lot of people probably remember I’ve considered kind of running for or filling a Senate seat, now, this would be the third time,” she said, referencing past opportunities in 2022, when Ted Budd won a North Carolina Senate seat, and in Florida, where Marco Rubio’s seat opened after his appointment as secretary of state.
“The timing of both of those didn’t really work out for me and to be fully transparent, I would love to do it,” she added.
Reflecting on the recent developments, Lara noted, “This is all kind of fresh within the past 24 hours for me, really learning that this was a viable option and that Senator Tillis wouldn’t be seeking reelection. So look, I’m considering it.”
President Trump said he has not yet discussed the Senate race with Lara but expressed confidence in her ability to step into the role. As the 2026 election cycle approaches, Lara Trump’s potential candidacy promises to draw significant attention, blending her political experience, media presence, and deep North Carolina roots.
