Donald Trump has his eyes on the prize of the Oval Office for 2024. But he might have another surprise coming.

Earlier this year, America was rocked by the announcement that Donald Trump was going to be arrested after being charged with an indictment for the possibility that he paid hush money to adult film star Stormy Daniels back during the 2016 elections.
The decision to charge Trump by the Manhattan D.A. office of Alvin Bragg was heavily criticized as just a political move that’s designed to attack Trump and try to prevent him from having a strong case for 2024 against a weak Joe Biden incumbency.
But that was just the latest of Trump’s legal troubles. He also had his home in Mar-a-Lago raided by the FBI because of the DOJ’s belief that he had illegally maintained documents after he left the White House in January of 2021.
Special counsel Jack Smith has been overseeing the investigation into the classified documents in question and whether Trump had a legal claim to them or not, and it seems as though this could be reached a head soon.
Rumors are flying that another indictment could be on the way for Donald Trump.
On Tuesday, Bill Barr, who served as attorney general during the Trump administration, said he was willing to “bet” that Trump would be indicted shortly.
Barr was asked on CBS Mornings about a meeting between three of Trump’s lawyers and special counsel Jack Smith on Monday. The conversation concerned potential criminal charges against Trump for his handling of classified papers seized from his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida in August 2022.
“I’ve said for a while this is the most dangerous legal risk facing the president. … There’s substantial evidence there,” Barr claimed.
“If I had to bet, I’d bet it’s near.”
The Messenger reports that a second grand jury is hearing testimony in the special counsel inquiry in South Florida.
Barr’s frank assessment of the likelihood of an indictment comes on the heels of a prediction by Republican Texas Senator Ted Cruz, in an interview with Fox News on Monday, that Trump will be indicted.
According to rules set forth by the Department of Justice, Garland is only allowed to have a limited role in the Smith inquiry.
Although the special counsel was appointed by the attorney general last autumn, Smith has the final say on whether or not to file charges. The Messenger stated that if Garland were to overturn the judgment, he would have to submit a report informing lawmakers of the change.
On Monday, Trump announced his expectation of an indictment on his Truth Social platform, claiming that he is being targeted by “Marxists” and “Fascists” in the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
It’s worth noting that indictments do not make Donald Trump ineligible to run for President in 2024. Even in the off chance that he were given any sort of jail or prison sentence, he still wouldn’t be forced off the ballots and unable to win back the White House.
That’s what makes these indictments so interesting. When Trump’s home was raided back in August, it emboldened his base because it was an obvious political attack. That emboldening happened again when he was arrested for dubious charges back in March of this year.
It’s entirely possible that Trump’s argument that the political establishment is corrupt to the core and is going after him and good American people is bolstered by these recent troubles he’s been having.
But it’s also possible that enough legal troubles could force the conservative base to consider someone who does not have quite as many issues in tow like Ron DeSantis.
