Ashley Biden, daughter of former President Joe Biden, has filed for divorce from her husband, Dr. Howard Krein, a distinguished plastic surgeon, ending their 13-year marriage. The filing was submitted on Monday in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, as verified by the New York Post.
That same day, the 44-year-old shared a moment of optimism on her Instagram Story, posting a photo of herself walking through a park, giving a thumbs-up, with Beyoncé’s “Freedom” playing in the background, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer, which initially reported the news.
Alongside the image, Ashley posted a reflective quote: “New life, new beginnings means new boundaries. New ways of being that won’t look or sound like they did before.”
The reasons for the couple’s separation remain undisclosed, as Philadelphia keeps divorce records private.
Their romance began in 2010, sparked by an introduction from Ashley’s late brother, Beau Biden. By late 2011, Krein proposed on a scenic cliff in Big Sur, California, after securing the approval of Ashley’s father, then-Vice President Joe Biden, per People magazine.
The outlet reported Joe’s enthusiastic support: “This is the right guy. And he’s getting a h*lluva woman.”
In June 2012, Ashley and Krein married at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Roman Catholic Church in Greenville, Delaware, where Ashley was baptized, surrounded by about 200 guests.
Reflecting on the event during her speech at last year’s Democratic National Convention, Ashley highlighted her father’s involvement.
“At the time, my dad was vice president, but he was also that dad who literally set up the entire reception,” she said. “He was riding around in his John Deere 4-wheeler, fixing the place settings, arranging the plants, and by the way, he was very emotional.”
Krein serves as an otolaryngologist and plastic surgeon at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals in Philadelphia, where the couple lived before parting ways. They have no children.
