Donald Trump has broken mainstream media. They can never be trusted again.
And CNN is about to shut down over a ratings disaster thanks to Trump’s election win.
In the wake of President-elect Donald Trump’s sweeping victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, MSNBC and CNN saw a significant drop in ratings, especially during their coverage following the election results announced early Wednesday morning.
According to Nielsen data, Thursday’s analysis of Trump’s win drew in just 596,000 total viewers for MSNBC throughout the day, with only 71,000 in the highly sought-after 25-54 age demographic, as reported by Mediaite.
CNN’s numbers were similarly low. Coverage of Trump’s victory brought in 419,000 total viewers on Thursday, with just 91,000 from the key demographic tuning in.
The networks fared even worse during primetime hours, where MSNBC’s Alex Wagner recorded her lowest ratings ever, and Chris Hayes hit his lowest viewership since May 2016, the outlet noted.
Compared to the same time last year, MSNBC’s viewership was down by 23 percent, while CNN experienced a sharper drop of 40 percent.
Meanwhile, Fox News benefitted tremendously from election coverage, drawing 2.6 million viewers on Thursday, with a robust 375,000 from the critical 25-54 demographic.
Fox’s audience was up more than 60 percent from the previous year, solidifying its position as the go-to channel for coverage of Trump’s victory.
Election night itself, between 8-11 p.m. EST on Tuesday, brought a rare ratings win for MSNBC over CNN, as CNN’s viewership was halved from its 2020 levels, dropping to 5.1 million from 9.6 million.
However, even with this win, MSNBC and CNN lagged far behind Fox News, which drew an impressive 10.3 million viewers during those primetime hours.
Other networks also experienced a ratings decline compared to their 2020 election night numbers. ABC’s audience on Tuesday night dropped to 5.9 million, a six percent decrease from four years ago.
NBC’s viewership slipped by five percent to 5.51 million, while CBS faced the largest drop, down 20 percent to 3.61 million viewers compared to its 2020 election night coverage, as reported by the Hollywood Reporter.
The night’s ratings reveal that while Fox News benefited from wall-to-wall election coverage of Trump’s victory, other major networks struggled to retain the large audiences they attracted in 2020.
What It Means For Mainstream Media Moving Forward
Despite CNN and MSNBC’s many attempts to label Donald Trump as a fascist, he was still able to win the presidency in convincing fashion.
Voters ultimately rejected these Leftist news outlet’s false claims about Trump. Not only did voters reject these members of the mainstream media, but they also proved that the media can no longer be trusted.
The mainstream media was already experiencing record lows as far as trustworthiness. But based off these latest ratings, these news outlets will likely experience even lower lows.
Independent news will soon become more mainstream as Americans have grown tired of the bias that is seen for Democrats from legacy news channels.
