Parents Outraged Over LGBTQ “Coming Out” Assignment at California High School
Parents in Southern California are expressing outrage after a controversial LGBTQ-themed assignment was given to students at Rancho Buena Vista High School.
The assignment, part of a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) seminar for freshmen, instructed students to imagine themselves as gay or lesbian and simulate a “coming out” process.
According to photos of the assignment, students were directed: “Stand in a circle. Each of you is now gay or lesbian, and you are about to begin your coming out process. You cannot talk for the rest of this activity.”
During a Vista Unified School District meeting on Tuesday, parents voiced their concerns, with many arguing that the lesson was inappropriate for a school setting.
James Leon, a parent whose daughter received the assignment, told the school board, “I don’t see how this is part of the California curriculum for education. There is nothing that it does other than groom children.”
Leon didn’t hold back, calling the exercise “disgusting” and demanding accountability. “It’s not okay. It’s disgusting and it should not be allowed,” he said. “Anybody who teaches this should be fired immediately.”

Leon’s daughter, who was among six students who walked out of the classroom after being given the instructions, raised the issue at home.
According to Leon, his daughter told him “right away when she got home. She said, ‘Dad, you have to hear this.’ She wanted to show me what was going on because she knows I am not for teaching any of that stuff in school,” Leon explained.
Other community members also expressed frustration, including a district bus driver who said, “I am totally disgusted. I am ashamed I work for the district, and you guys allow this to happen in our schools.”
However, not everyone agreed with the backlash. A teacher at the school defended the assignment and condemned the criticism the school has received since the instructions were shared online.
“People with no connection to our community or even our state have started to flood RBV social media accounts with additional unfounded accusations and slanderous statements,” the teacher stated.
The assignment has sparked a heated debate about the boundaries of classroom discussions on social issues, with parents, educators, and the wider community weighing in on what constitutes appropriate curriculum content for high school students.
But this shouldn’t even be a debate. It’s rather obvious that LGBTQ issues should not be taught to kids in school. That’s a conversation that needs to be had between a child and their parents.
However, the Left would prefer the government teach children about these issues. Imagine if the roles were reversed and Republicans were demanding that every student in America study the Bible in depth.
Unsurprisingly, Democrats everywhere would throw a fit, further proving their blatant hypocrisy.
