Shakeups happen all the time in politics. But it can still come as a shock.

And this FBI leader called it quits in a move that shook Washington, D.C. to its core.

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino has officially announced his exit from the agency come January. This comes amid rumors about his departure, and it’s clear that Bongino is ready to step away from the bureaucratic trenches.

Bongino took to X to share the news directly with the American people, expressing deep gratitude to the key players who brought him into this role.

He specifically thanked President Donald Trump, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and FBI Director Kash Patel for trusting him with such a vital position.

I will be leaving my position with the FBI in January,” Bongino’s post said.

“I want to thank President Trump, AG Bondi, and Director Patel for the opportunity to serve with purpose.”

But Bongino didn’t stop there—he made sure to tip his hat to the real heroes in this story: everyday Americans.

“Most importantly, I want to thank you, my fellow Americans, for the privilege to serve you,” he said. “God bless America, and all those who defend Her.”

This announcement didn’t come out of nowhere. Reports from outlets like MS NOW had already been buzzing about Bongino’s plans, painting a picture of a man who’s methodically wrapping up his time at the FBI.

According to those reports, Bongino has been discreetly sharing his intentions with others, signaling that he’s done with the daily grind at headquarters.

“Bongino has quietly told confidants he plans to formally leave his job early in the new year and will not be returning to headquarters to work this month, according to eight people briefed on his account,” per the outlet.

Insiders also revealed that Bongino had informed his team and top FBI brass about his timeline, showing just how organized this transition is.

“Bongino told his team and some senior FBI officials that he tentatively planned to announce his departure on Dec. 19, according to four people. Several people said some of Bongino’s personal effects have been cleared out of his office as of last week,” according to MS NOW reports.

Even President Trump weighed in on the matter, offering high praise for Bongino’s tenure and speculating on what might come next for the outspoken deputy director.

The president said to reporters that Bongino “did a great job” and he most likely desired “to go back to his show.”
