Donald Trump’s goal is to tackle the crisis at the southern border. He won’t rest until he’s hit this goal.
And heart-stopping immigration news hits the Oval Office that raises Trump’s eyebrows.
According to reports from the New York Post, illegal crossings along the U.S.-Mexico border have plunged to numbers not seen in years thanks to President Trump’s aggressive action in tackling the illegal immigration crisis.
In February, an average of just 359 illegal migrants per day have been apprehended across the entire southern border—more than a 90% drop compared to the same time last year, according to leaked data from Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
If this trend continues, February could see the lowest monthly border crossings in at least 25 years. Analysts suggest that illegal immigration could reach levels not recorded since 1968, nearly six decades ago.
“If you break down the numbers, we haven’t seen figures this low since the 1960s. If this holds, we’re talking about a 60-year low,” stated Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies.
CBP data reveals that as of February 11, only 3,953 illegal migrants had been apprehended this month. If the trend continues, the monthly total could hover around 10,000—a figure not recorded since CBP began tracking monthly data in 1999. The closest comparison was April 2017, early in Trump’s first term, when crossings hit just over 11,000.
“That’s a very, very low number,” noted John Gramlich, associate director at the Pew Research Center. He pointed out that border crossings had already been trending downward for nearly a year, in part due to former President Joe Biden’s restrictions on asylum claims.
Around the same time last year, border agents were dealing with an average of 4,850 illegal crossings per day—more than ten times the current rate, according to federal data. The dramatic decline is being felt across the southern border.
In Terrell County, Texas, Sheriff Thaddeus Cleveland noted that his office is typically overwhelmed with reports of illegal crossings during the cooler months.
“It’s a relief,” Cleveland said to the New York Post. “We’ve gone from one extreme to the other extreme, historic levels of people crossing, historic levels of the low apprehensions. It’s very surprising.”
Despite the overall decline, San Diego, California, remains the top location for illegal crossings, with 934 apprehensions recorded so far in February.
The sharp drop comes as the Trump administration moves swiftly to clamp down on illegal immigration. Key measures include ending the Biden administration’s “catch and release” policy, sending thousands of troops to the border, and launching a nationwide deportation effort.
“Already in the last few weeks, a message is being sent that the border isn’t going to be trampled over anymore, that national security isn’t a joke to us,” a Border Patrol source said to the New York Post.
Mexico has also responded, deploying 10,000 troops to its northern border after Trump threatened a 25% tariff on all imports if action wasn’t taken.
Meanwhile, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has ramped up operations, arresting 11,000 illegal migrants within the first 18 days of Trump’s presidency.
The administration has also resumed deportation flights to Venezuela after the Maduro regime blocked the effort for almost a year. In a move that has drawn sharp reactions, Trump has begun transferring illegal migrant criminals to Guantanamo Bay.
Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks recently told “Fox & Friends” that agents working at the border have been waiting for Trump’s leadership to take decisive action.
“U.S. Border Patrol knows how to get the job done, we know how to secure the border,” Banks stated. “All we needed was a president that was going to empower us—a strong leader like President Trump—and a secretary like Secretary Noem who understands exactly what’s needed to secure the border.”
