Sen. Jon Tester Walks Back Endorsement of Kamala Harris, Citing Focus on Montana Election
Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) surprised many on Thursday when he declined to endorse Kamala Harris’s potential presidential bid, despite previously suggesting it was more important to elect her than secure his own reelection.
Just a day earlier, Tester, Montana’s senior senator, emphasized the significance of Harris’s candidacy over his own campaign, particularly following his push for President Joe Biden to step aside in the 2024 race.
At a press conference in Missoula, Tester clarified his stance, expressing concern over the possibility of his Senate race becoming overly influenced by national politics.
“I’m not going to endorse for the presidential, and I’ll tell you why — two reasons,” Tester said.
“Because I’m focused on my race, and number two, people want to nationalize this race, and this isn’t about national politics. This is about Montana.”
The remarks represented a shift from his comments the day before, when Tester stressed the importance of Harris’s leadership during a rally in Missoula.
“Mine isn’t the important one; it’s the one at the top. There’s a lot at stake here. There’s democracy at stake, there’s rural America at stake, there’s how we treat one another at stake. There’s a lot at stake,” Tester remarked, referring to Harris’s potential campaign.
Tester highlighted the need for leadership that could unite people, saying, “You’ve got to have leadership that knows how to bring people together so that people can work together to find solutions.”
“That doesn’t mean you compromise your values, that doesn’t mean you do stupid (stuff). That means you bring people together, to get people on the same page to solve problems.”

Tester’s refusal to endorse Harris comes amid tight polling for the Montana Senate race, with Republican challenger Tim Sheehy leading Tester in several surveys.
This political context further fueled criticism from the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), who accused Tester of inconsistency.
NRSC spokeswoman Maggie Abboud seized on the senator’s comments, issuing a sharp rebuke: “This embarrassing backtrack is the latest in a series of flip-flops from a desperate, two-faced politician who lies to voters as easily as he breathes.”
“Jon Tester votes with Kamala Harris 100% of the time, but doesn’t have the courage to defend that record, so he is lying to voters about who he supports for President instead.”
As the race for Montana’s Senate seat heats up, Tester’s tightrope walk between national issues and local priorities continues to show just how unreliable of a candidate he really is.
