Progressive Firebrand Rep. Jasmine Crockett Withdraws Bid for House Oversight Committee Leadership
In a surprising turn of events, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas), known for her radical Leftist stance, announced Tuesday that she was stepping back from her campaign to lead Democrats on the influential House Oversight Committee. The decision came after it became evident she didn’t have enough support to secure the role.
“It was clear by the numbers that my style of leadership is not exactly what they were looking for, and so I didn’t think that it was fair for me to then push forward and try to rebuke that,” Crockett said to reporters.
In her place, Democrats chose Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) as the new ranking member, filling the vacancy left by the late Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.), who passed away in May.
Garcia, now poised to lead the party’s efforts on the committee, promised a robust approach, stating, “We will hold Donald Trump and his Administration accountable for their corruption — and work to make our government more effective for the American people.”
Crockett, a rising star among progressives, has built a reputation for her sharp-tongued exchanges during committee hearings, often going viral for her unapologetic and unhinged rhetoric. She leaned into this during the internal race to replace Connolly, emphasizing her ability to confront opponents head-on.
However, despite her passionate campaign, she acknowledged Tuesday that “people may be disappointed” by her defeat but pledged to stay a “team player.”
This process unfolded over two days. On Monday, Oversight Committee Democrats held a vote, where Crockett hinted she trailed behind her competitors.
By Tuesday, a caucus meeting solidified Garcia’s appointment. Crockett took to X to congratulate her colleague, writing, “Congratulations [Robert Garcia] for being elected Ranking Member of the House Oversight Committee. The work of this committee has never been more critical. Let’s get the American people the accountability they deserve.”

This outcome is a blow to the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, which had hoped to install a dynamic voice like Crockett atop the committee known for its high-stakes investigations.
Last year, another prominent progressive, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), also fell short in her bid to become ranking member, losing to Connolly.
Meanwhile, the Oversight Committee, chaired by Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), is diving into a contentious probe into former President Joe Biden’s mental acuity during his term and his use of an autopen for executive actions.
Comer has already secured testimony from key figures, including Biden’s physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, and former aide Neera Tanden, who appeared before the panel on Tuesday.
The investigation gained traction following revelations in Jake Tapper’s book “Original Sin,” which alleged efforts to hide Biden’s health challenges.
Crockett has fiercely defended Biden against these claims, dismissing Republican attacks on his cognitive abilities. On Katie Couric’s “Next Question” podcast last week, she declared, “Even if we want to say — which I refuse to accept — that Joe Biden was mentally deficient, let me tell you something, his mental deficiency is still a thousand times better than what we currently have.”
Known for her memorable clashes with Republicans, Crockett has become a polarizing figure. Last year, she made headlines for a biting remark about Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), describing her as having a “bleach blonde, bad-built butch body.” Her outspoken style has also drawn criticism from President Trump, who on Tuesday called her “a seriously Low IQ individual.”
