Maxine Waters Takes Aim at Melania Trump Amid Anti-DOGE Rally in Los Angeles

In a speech delivered from the stage of an anti-DOGE protest in Los Angeles this past weekend, Democratic Representative Maxine Waters turned heads by suggesting that President Donald Trump should turn his immigration scrutiny inward—starting with First Lady Melania Trump.

The California lawmaker’s comments, captured in videos now circulating widely across social media, sparked a fresh wave of controversy as she questioned the citizenship roots of the first lady and her family.

“When he [Trump] talks about birthright, and he’s going to undo the fact that the Constitution allows those who are born here, even if the parents are undocumented, they have a right to stay in America. If he wants to start looking so closely to find those who were born here and their parents were undocumented, maybe he ought to first look at Melania,” Waters declared to the crowd.

She didn’t stop there, adding, “We don’t know whether or not her parents were documented. And maybe we better just take a look.”

Melania Trump’s journey to U.S. citizenship is well-documented. Born in what was then Yugoslavia, she became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2006, a milestone that made her the first first lady to achieve that status. She’s also the second to hail from outside the United States, following Louisa Catherine Johnson Adams—wife of President John Quincy Adams—who was born in London in 1775.

Official records note that Melania sponsored her parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, for green cards and eventual citizenship after securing her own status. The couple, originally from modern-day Slovenia, became U.S. citizens in 2018, according to a 2018 New York Times report.

Amalija passed away in 2024, while Viktor has been seen alongside the Trump family at recent high-profile events, including sitting beside Barron Trump at the inauguration.

Waters’ remarks come in the wake of President Trump’s latest executive order, signed on his first day back in office, which targets birthright citizenship. The move aims to reinterpret the 14th Amendment, which declares, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”

Trump’s order seeks to limit this right, excluding children born to undocumented immigrants or those on temporary visas. The policy has ignited fierce debate and is currently stalled in legal battles, with the administration escalating the fight to the Supreme Court just last week.

The Los Angeles rally where Waters spoke drew hundreds of demonstrators opposing the Trump administration’s push, alongside the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), to streamline federal operations.

Protesters rallied against efforts to audit agencies for waste, fraud, and corruption, marching to the VA hospital on Wilshire Boulevard, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

“We are here because we are not going to let Trump, we’re not going to let Elon Musk, his co-president, or anybody else take the United States Constitution down,” Waters told the crowd.

Her comments about Melania Trump have since taken on a life of their own online. Clips of the speech are gaining traction on platforms like TikTok and X, where conservative voices are piling on criticism of the outspoken liberal representative.

The suggestion that the first lady’s family history merits investigation has only fueled the fire, adding a personal twist to an already heated political clash.

As the executive order’s fate hangs in the balance and protests continue to simmer, Waters’ provocative words prove just how dirty Democrats can get in their tactics to oppose the Trump administration.
