Republican congressman issues a stark warning about Trump that’s causing heads to explode

Rep. August Pfluger

The GOP is doing everything they can to help Trump’s presidency succeed. But not every battle can be easily won.

And this Republican congressman issues a stark warning about Trump that’s causing heads to explode.

Tax Day Warning: GOP Pushes for Permanent Tax Cuts to Shield Families

Rep. August Pfluger, R-Texas, who leads the influential Republican Study Committee (RSC), is sounding the alarm on a looming financial hit that could jolt millions of American households and small businesses by 2026.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Pfluger cautioned that without decisive action to extend President Donald Trump’s 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), families could face a staggering tax increase.

“If Democrats get their way and let these tax cuts expire, Americans will be crushed by the largest tax hike in history – a 22% increase hitting 40 million families and 26 million small businesses,” Pfluger warned.

He emphasized the urgency of making these tax cuts permanent to ignite job growth, supercharge the economy, and shield family budgets from what he calls the Left’s relentless push for higher taxes and spending.

The RSC, a powerhouse within the House GOP with over 175 members, serves as a hub for conservative ideas. Pfluger reaffirmed the group’s mission, stating they are “fighting to make President Trump’s historic Tax Cuts and Jobs Act permanent, so families can keep more of their hard-earned money instead of sending it to the IRS.”

Echoing this sentiment, Rep. Beth Van Duyne, R-Texas, who chairs the RSC’s budget task force, highlighted how extending the TCJA, alongside Trump’s other tax proposals, could position the U.S. as “the most advantageous country in which to invest, relocate, or expand a business.”

She added, “These vital, pro-growth tax reforms will work alongside our efforts to slash federal regulations and bureaucracy to empower economic expansion and financial security for the American people and our job creators.”

At the heart of the GOP’s strategy is budget reconciliation, a legislative tool that allows the party in power to fast-track major fiscal policies by reducing the Senate’s approval threshold from 60 votes to a simple majority of 51, as long as the bill focuses on taxes, spending, or the national debt. Beyond preserving the TCJA, Trump is advocating for bold measures like eliminating taxes on tipped wages, overtime pay, and Social Security benefits for seniors.

Last week, House Republicans took a critical step by aligning with the Senate on a reconciliation framework, paving the way for committees to flesh out the details with specific policies. However, the path forward is fraught with challenges.

With slim three-seat majorities in both chambers, Republicans face a tightrope walk to pass a bill. The House is pushing for $1.5 trillion in spending cuts, while the Senate’s starting point is a modest $4 billion, though Senate Republicans have pledged to aim higher.

The stakes are monumental. According to the Tax Foundation, extending the TCJA would reduce federal revenue by $4.5 trillion. House conservatives, led by the RSC’s steering group, are adamant that any reconciliation bill must avoid adding to the deficit.

Yet, failing to secure these tax cuts before the 2026 midterms could spell disaster for the GOP, potentially triggering economic unease—especially when paired with the ripple effects of Trump’s earlier tariffs.

Kimberly Clausing, a nonresident senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, explained to Fox News Digital that “if the tax cuts expire, the median family would lose about $1,000,” citing estimates from the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center.

She also noted that Trump’s initial tariff plans, before he scaled them back, could have cost households an average of $3,800, per the Yale Budget Lab.

The House Ways and Means Committee, which oversees tax policy, issued a stark warning last December. “Congress needs to act swiftly to take this threat of a tax hike off the table and give the American people assurances that the relief they have been demanding has arrived,” the memo declared.

With time ticking down, Pfluger and his allies are rallying to lock in these tax cuts, framing them as a lifeline for families and a catalyst for prosperity. The fight is on to ensure Americans keep more of what they earn—before the taxman comes calling.
