The adults are about to be back in power. And they aren’t wasting any time.
And now Trump sent a groundbreaking message to America’s enemy that could change everything.
President-elect Donald Trump called for Russia to pursue a ceasefire with Ukraine following the collapse of the Assad regime in Syria, framing Moscow’s position as increasingly fragile.
“There should be an immediate ceasefire and negotiations should begin,” Mr. Trump posted early Sunday on Truth Social.
“Too many lives are being so needlessly wasted, too many families destroyed, and if it keeps going, it can turn into something much bigger, and far worse,” he warned.
Mr. Trump also urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to seize this moment of opportunity.
“I know [Russian President] Vladimir [Putin] well. This is his time to act. China can help. The World is waiting!” the president-elect added.
The dramatic developments in Syria saw President Bashar Assad flee the country on Sunday, with rebels capturing Damascus and marking the end of his regime.
Mr. Trump wasted no time addressing the implications:
“Assad is gone. He has fled his country. His protector, Russia, Russia, Russia, led by Vladimir Putin, was not interested in protecting him any longer.”
“They lost all interest in Syria because of Ukraine, where close to 600,000 Russian soldiers lay wounded or dread, in a war that should never have started, and could go on forever,” Mr. Trump added, emphasizing the toll the prolonged conflict has taken on Russia.
He pointed out that both Russia and Iran are now in a “weakened state,” saying, “Ukraine and its bad economy” have drained Russia, while Iran is “weakened because of Israel and its fighting success.”
Mr. Trump also highlighted the desperate state of Ukraine, suggesting they too might be ready to end the war.
“Likewise, [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelenskyy and Ukraine would like to make a deal and stop the madness,” he wrote, lamenting the staggering loss of “400,000 soldiers, and many more civilians.”
Over the weekend, Mr. Trump met with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris to discuss pathways to resolving the Russia-Ukraine war.
However, the Kremlin, while open to negotiating terms, has dismissed the possibility of an immediate ceasefire.
For years, Mr. Trump has claimed he could bring an end to the conflict in just one day if elected.
Russian officials, however, remain skeptical, asserting such a resolution is not feasible under current conditions.
