Biden has been out of office for almost a month now. But he’s still taking losses.
And Joe Biden just got smacked with another defeat that he’ll never recover from.
Joe Biden’s Popularity Hits Historic Low as Trump Sees Favorability Boost
A recent Gallup poll has revealed that Joe Biden is now the least popular living U.S. president, while his former Republican opponent, Donald Trump, is experiencing a surge in favorability ratings. The survey, conducted last month, paints a bleak picture for Biden as he now navigates life away from the White House.
According to the findings, 57% of Americans hold an unfavorable view of the ex-president, while only 39% see him in a positive light. Among those dissatisfied with Biden, at least 60% of independents and 20% of Democrats registered their disapproval.
By comparison, Donald Trump enjoys a more balanced public perception. The poll shows that 48% of U.S. adults view him favorably, with 50% holding an unfavorable opinion. The divide is particularly stark among party lines—only 7% of Democrats express a positive view of Trump, while 47% of independents hold a favorable opinion of Trump.
“Trump’s and Biden’s ratings are essentially unchanged from those from a survey after the 2024 election, indicating neither has gotten an image boost from the news surrounding the presidential transition,” the survey states.
Gallup also highlights that Biden once enjoyed a significantly higher favorability rating, reaching a peak of 61% in January 2017 as he wrapped up his tenure as vice president.
However, his standing among the public has steadily eroded since his inauguration in January 2021.
Trump, on the other hand, has reached his third-highest favorability rating since Gallup began tracking public sentiment toward him in 1999. His popularity currently matches that of former President Bill Clinton.
Trump previously hit favorability highs of 50% in 2005—during his time as the face of NBC’s “The Apprentice”—and briefly saw a similar 48% rating in April 2020, during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
While Clinton shares Trump’s 48% favorability ranking, he benefits from fewer detractors, with only 41% of Americans holding a negative view of him.
Meanwhile, former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush lead the pack in terms of public approval.
Obama boasts the highest favorability rating of any living U.S. president, with 59% of Americans holding a positive opinion of him, while just 36% disapprove.
Bush remains relatively well-regarded, with 52% of Americans viewing him favorably and 34% unfavorably.
The dynamics among these leaders were on display last month during the state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter, where a viral moment caught several ex-presidents engaging in hushed conversations.
Trump and Obama, specifically, appeared deeply engaged in a discussion regarding a “matter of importance,” which a forensic lip reader later suggested to the New York Post involved foreign policy.
The former commanders-in-chief also gathered at the U.S. Capitol on January 20 for Trump’s second inaugural ceremony, pointing to the ongoing shifts in American political history.
Gallup’s findings are based on telephone interviews conducted with 1,001 U.S. adults between January 21-27. The survey carries a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points.
