Musk has distanced himself from President Trump in recent weeks. Now, he’s got other plans.

But Ron DeSantis just smacked Elon Musk with a stark warning that he simply can’t ignore.

DeSantis Calls for Musk to Reform, Not Reinvent, U.S. Politics

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, speaking at a Jacksonville press conference on Monday, weighed in on Elon Musk’s plan to launch a cost-cutting “America Party.” While praising the billionaire’s ingenuity, DeSantis urged Musk to focus on revitalizing the existing political system rather than creating a new one.

“I think Washington needs to be overhauled 100%, but I just don’t think a third party is going to do it,” DeSantis said, addressing Musk’s recent political move. The Republican governor and former 2024 presidential contender warned that a third-party effort could split votes in key races, handing victories to Democrats.

“The problem is, when you do another party, especially if you’re running on some of the issues that he talks about, you know, that would end up, if he funds Senate candidates and House candidates in competitive races, that would likely end up meaning the Democrats would win all the competitive Senate and House races,” the Florida Governor said. “I’m a Republican … I don’t want to see that happen,” he added.

DeSantis shared these thoughts unprompted at the close of an education-focused press event. He lauded Musk, the mastermind behind Tesla, SpaceX, Starlink, and X, as “one of the most innovative entrepreneurs … probably in world history.”

The governor also applauded Musk’s support for President Trump and Republicans in 2024 and his work leading the Department of Government Efficiency to tackle waste.

“I think he’s got a lot more left in the tank,” DeSantis said, suggesting Musk champion constitutional reforms like balanced budget and term limit amendments instead of a new party.

“Honestly, if you’re concerned about the debt … I don’t think just electing a few better people is going to change the trajectory,” DeSantis stated.

“We need the incentives in Washington that are going to lead to these outcomes really regardless of the outcome of elections at this point.”

He highlighted how many states, under Article V of the Constitution, have pushed for a balanced budget amendment, urging Musk to back this effort for a “monumental impact.”

“I’m a believer in trying to work this stuff out through the Republican process … but I think even more than that, doing these amendments — which are within our grasp — it doesn’t require Congress,” DeSantis declared.

“You can do it through Article V and do it through the states … that would have a huge impact on the trajectory of the country.”

Musk’s America Party was spurred by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed by Trump on July 4. The bill, expected to add $3.9 trillion to the national debt over 10 years per the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, drew Musk’s ire. The 54-year-old called it a “mockery of the work” of his DOGE team, focused on curbing deficits.

DeSantis’s comments cast Musk as a potential catalyst for fiscal reform, urging him to strengthen the system rather than start anew.
