House Moves to Honor Melania Trump with Kennedy Center Opera House Renaming

In a subtle yet significant move, the House of Representatives took a step on Tuesday to rename the Kennedy Center’s renowned opera house after First Lady Melania Trump. The proposal, embedded in a government funding bill, reflects a growing trend of Republican-led initiatives to celebrate the Trump family’s influence.

Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho) introduced the amendment to rename the opera house, which was quietly included in the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill. The measure passed the House Appropriations Committee with a 33-25 vote, gaining support from Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Wash.), who crossed party lines to back the proposal.

“Naming the Opera House at the Kennedy Center after [Melania Trump] is an excellent way to recognize the first lady’s appreciation for the arts,” Simpson said after the amendment’s approval. “I am proud to honor her support and commitment in promoting the arts and humanities.”

The opera house, a cornerstone of the Kennedy Center since its opening in 1971, is a 2,347-seat venue that serves as the home of the Washington National Opera and hosts the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors each December. The complex remains a cultural landmark in Washington, D.C.

This move comes amid other high-profile actions involving the Kennedy Center. Earlier this year, President Trump announced himself as the chairman of the Kennedy Center and restructured its Board of Trustees.

In a Truth Social post, he stated, “Just last year, the Kennedy Center featured Drag Shows specifically targeting our youth – THIS WILL STOP. The Kennedy Center is an American Jewel, and must reflect the brightest STARS on its stage from all across our Nation. For the Kennedy Center, THE BEST IS YET TO COME!”

The Trumps’ connection to the arts was further highlighted last month when the president and first lady attended a performance of Les Misérables at the Kennedy Center.

The musical’s anthem, “Can You Hear The People Sing?,” has become a staple at Trump’s campaign rallies, resonating with his supporters.

The funding bill, which includes Simpson’s amendment, supports agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of the Interior, and the U.S. Forest Service.

However, it still faces hurdles, requiring approval from the full House and the Senate—where Democrats hold the power to filibuster—before the October 1 deadline to avoid a government shutdown.

Simpson’s proposal is part of a wave of Republican efforts to honor President Trump. Earlier this year, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) introduced legislation to carve Trump’s likeness onto Mount Rushmore.

Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas) proposed featuring Trump’s image on the $100 bill, while Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-N.Y.) pushed to designate June 14, Trump’s birthday, as a national holiday.

Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) introduced a measure to allow Trump to run for a third term, and Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fla.) suggested renaming Washington, D.C.’s Metrorail system the “TRUMP TRAIN” by tying federal funding to the change. Several Republicans have also advocated for Trump to receive a Nobel Peace Prize for his achievements regarding foreign policy.
