Donald Trump usually knows which way the House is going to tilt. But not this time.
Because Congress surprises President Trump with a bill he never could have expected.
House Republicans Push to Rename Dulles Airport After Donald Trump
House Republicans are advancing an effort to rename one of Washington, D.C.’s major airports in honor of former President Donald Trump, according to The Daily Wire.
Freshman Representative Addison McDowell (R-NC) introduced legislation proposing the renaming of Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia to Donald J. Trump International Airport.
The announcement comes less than a week after Trump began his second term, declaring the start of the “golden age of America.”
“We have entered the golden age of America largely thanks to President Trump’s leadership,” McDowell stated. “It is only right that the two airports servicing our nation’s capital are duly honored and respected by two of the best presidents to have the honor of serving our great nation.”
The bill is concise, spanning just two pages. It explicitly states that Dulles Airport “shall after the date of the enactment of this Act be known and designated as the ‘Donald J. Trump International Airport.’” It also specifies that all official U.S. records referencing Dulles Airport will reflect the name change.
McDowell is joined by Reps. Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA), Brandon Gill (R-TX), Riley Moore (R-WV), and Brian Jack (R-GA) in championing the proposal.
Reschenthaler spearheaded a similar initiative during the previous Congress, but the bill failed to progress beyond committee. With Republicans now holding both chambers of Congress and Trump back in the Oval Office, proponents are optimistic about the bill’s prospects.
“President Donald J. Trump, the greatest president of my lifetime, was just sworn into office for a second term after a historic landslide victory,” Reschenthaler remarked.
“This legislation will cement his status in our nation’s capital as our fearless commander-in-chief, extraordinary leader, and relentless champion for the American people.”
Rep. Moore echoed this sentiment, adding: “President Trump has been the most consequential politician in my lifetime. His agenda to lift up the forgotten men and women of America reverberates so strongly with the people of my district and so many across the country. I’m proud to be co-leading this bill with Congressman McDowell and hope to see it voted on the floor of the People’s House soon.”
Washington Dulles International Airport, which marked its 60th anniversary in 2022, was named after John Foster Dulles, the former Secretary of State under President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Efforts to rename the airport have faced opposition in the past, particularly from Democrats.
Former Rep. Abigail Spanberger, a Virginia Democrat who is now running for governor, criticized the name change proposal.
“This idea is ridiculous, but sadly real,” she said on X (formerly Twitter). “Congress must act on pressing issues like reauthorizing the FAA and passing the national security supplemental. Yet this is what a Member of House Republican leadership focuses on — renaming Virginia’s Dulles airport after Trump.”
Anticipating backlash, McDowell offered a sharp retort in comments he made to The Daily Wire: “Democrats are all for changing genders — so why not change the name of an airport? Honoring President Trump’s legacy at Dulles is an easy decision. Democrats want to change the names of genders — Republicans want to honor real leadership, easy enough.”
As the legislation gains traction, it promises to reignite partisan debates over Trump’s legacy and his continued influence in American politics.
And while this piece of legislation isn’t super important in the long run, the meltdown of Leftists over Dulles International Airport being named Donald J. Trump International Airport will certainly be entertaining.
