In a radical move that has created controversy, Michigan State Representative Carrie Rheingans, a Democrat from Ann Arbor, took to TikTok on Monday to address “trans kids here in Michigan.” Sporting a “Protect Trans Kids” sweatshirt, she delivered a message of support, assuring them that “gender-affirming” care remains legal in the state.
This comes in the wake of the University of Michigan’s hospital network halting such procedures for minors due to pressure from the Department of Justice.
Rheingans emphasized that alternative options for care are still available in Michigan. “I want you to know, as trans kids here in Michigan, that this care is obviously safe and effective. That’s why it’s been approved and why it’s been used all across the country and continues to be used,” she said in the video.
She encouraged young people to “please contact our office” for assistance in finding resources, offering a direct lifeline for them.
“We love you. We are really supportive of you as kids, and we want to make sure that you can grow up and thrive here in Michigan,” she stated.
Her message arrives at a time of heightened scrutiny over gender-affirming care for minors. Once endorsed by segments of the medical community and federal government as a treatment for gender dysphoria, these interventions—encompassing surgeries and puberty blockers—have faced growing concerns.
A Health and Human Services review, released shortly after President Donald Trump’s inauguration, cautioned that “These interventions carry risk of significant harms including infertility/sterility, s*xual dysfunction, impaired bone density accrual, adverse cognitive impacts, cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders, psychiatric disorders, surgical complications, and regret.”
This shift in perspective isn’t entirely new. Last summer, the Biden administration voiced opposition to lowering age minimums for hormonal treatments and surgeries, as reported by The New York Times.
The Trump administration has since intensified its stance, threatening to cut federal funding to hospitals continuing these procedures for minors, prompting major institutions like Kaiser Permanente and Children’s National Hospital to suspend them.
In Michigan, the issue has deepened political divides. Republican State Representative Brad Paquette, who is spearheading efforts to stop gender-affirming procedures for children, spoke to The Daily Wire about his work.
“So here in the state of Michigan, one of the unfortunate aspects is my colleagues on the other side of the aisle are completely captured by this ideology, this gender theory,” he said.
Despite a “good relationship” with Rheingans and extensive discussions, Paquette highlighted a fundamental divide, noting, “She has this mentality that she carries — that the trans activists carry — that there are safe spaces, that you’re an ally or you’re not.”
Rheingans, a vocal advocate for LGBTQ issues, stood her ground amid criticism. Responding to conservative commentator Steve Guest, who labeled her video “one of the most horrifying videos that I’ve ever seen posted by a politician,” she wrote on social media, “Horrifying because I told children that I love them. Calm down.”
In another post, she added, “Kids need to see that some grownups love them, and not all are bullies.”
Her advocacy extends beyond this moment. Earlier this year, Rheingans championed the expansion of Michigan’s civil rights law to include protections for s*xual orientation and gender identity.
At the 2024 Ann Arbor Pride Festival, she urged greater representation, declaring, “If you have never thought about running for office, we need more gays in office, go run for office. We need to have a bigger LGBTQ caucus.”
Rheingans’ video shows just how obsessed Democrat lawmakers are with forcing the transgender ideology on America’s youth. There’s no telling how far they will continue to push this radical agenda.
