While campaigning, most politicians have mastered pretending they’re something they’re not.

This is obviously done in an effort to obtain votes ahead of an election. And currently, Vice President Kamala Harris is participating in this exact strategy.

Whether she’s pretending to be a moderate through her flip-flopping of several major policies, or pretending to be an average everyday U.S. citizen, Harris can’t seem to help but portray herself differently depending on the day.

And it’s causing a major outcry from voters across the country.

Harris Concocts Fake Accent During Speech

On Monday, Vice President Kamala Harris faced accusations of using a “fake accent” during her address to teachers union members in Michigan. The incident occurred while Harris was speaking at a high school in Detroit, where she seemed to shift her tone, particularly when interacting with supporters in the audience.

At one point, Harris made an impassioned call to recognize the contributions of union workers, saying, “You may not be a union member, but you better thank a union member for the five-day workweek. You better thank a union member for sick leave. You better thank a union member for paid leave. You better thank a union member for vacation time.” This part of her speech quickly spread on social media, with several users sharing clips on X (formerly Twitter).

The Trump campaign seized on the moment, pointing out that Harris delivered nearly identical remarks later that day to union workers in Pittsburgh, where the supposed accent was absent. “Let’s see if you can spot the difference…,” read a post from the Trump campaign’s X account, accompanied by video clips comparing the two speeches.

Comedian and podcast host Chad Prather posted a clip of Harris’s speech on X, calling it “SO CRINGE!” He went on to criticize Harris, stating, “Kamala Harris has again brought out her FAKE accent…this time in Detroit, Michigan! NO ONE IS BUYING IT!”

Matt Whitlock, a Republican communications strategist, offered a sharp critique, suggesting that politics is merely a performance for Harris. “She changes fake accents like she changes policy positions and political personas,” Whitlock wrote. He argued that Harris was “pretending to be a moderate” by adopting a southern accent but would soon return to her “San Francisco liberal” persona.

The backlash didn’t end there. Comedian Terrence K. Williams also weighed in, accusing Harris of “pretending to be a black southern woman” and pandering for votes. “She is mocking southern folks,” he wrote, blasting her for what he saw as an inauthentic attempt to connect with voters.

Harris, born in Oakland, California, and raised in the Bay Area, attended Howard University in Washington, DC, and the University of California’s Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco. Critics have noted that she has no apparent Southern ties, with her father hailing from Jamaica and her mother from India.

This isn’t the first time Harris has been accused of altering her accent to appeal to different audiences. Back in July, she was criticized on social media for adopting a Southern drawl during a rally in Atlanta. In 2021, she also faced online ridicule after appearing to mimic a French accent during a trip to Paris.

Harris’s critics argue that these instances point to a pattern of behavior in which the vice president attempts to align herself with certain communities in ways that feel forced and inauthentic.

Whether her latest speech in Detroit is another example of this or simply a case of rhetorical emphasis, Kamala Harris proves that she is simply unauthentic and incapable of properly relating to everyday Americans.
