Originally, Stefanik’s Senate confirmation for the U.N. role was on hold until after the April 1 special elections in Florida, where Republicans expect to pick up two more House seats following the departures of Reps. Michael Waltz and Matt Gaetz. Once that happened, her nomination was set to breeze through.
But Trump isn’t taking any chances with her relatively secure district. “With a very tight Majority, I don’t want to take a chance on anyone else running for Elise’s seat,” he explained. “The people love Elise and, with her, we have nothing to worry about come Election Day.”
Stefanik had stepped back from her role as Chair of the House Republican Conference late last year after Trump tapped her for the U.N. gig, with Rep. Lisa McClain (R-MI) stepping in to fill the void.
