Reid has been known to spew ridiculous takes about American politics. But this latest one may have reached new levels of idiocy.
And Joy Reid of MSNBC made a deranged statement about Trump that left even Democrats scratching their heads.
Joy Reid Equates Biden’s COVID-19 Recovery to Trump Narrowly Avoiding an Assassin’s Bullet
In a striking comparison, MSNBC host Joy Reid suggested that President Biden’s potential recovery from COVID-19 could be viewed in the same light as former President Donald Trump surviving an assassination attempt.
Reid made this comparison during the network’s coverage of the Republican National Convention (RNC) on Wednesday night.
Earlier in the day, it was revealed that Biden had contracted COVID-19 for the second time during his presidency. Meanwhile, the RNC was holding its third night of events in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
“These two men are both elderly. Donald Trump is an elderly man who, for whatever reason,” Reid said, “was given nine seconds to take an iconic photo op during an active shooter situation. Weird situation, we’ll figure that out one day.”
Reid then drew a parallel between Trump’s ordeal and Biden’s health situation. “This current President of the United States is 81 years old and has COVID. Should he be fine in a couple of days, doesn’t that convey exactly the same thing?” she asked. “That he’s strong enough – older than Trump – to have gotten something that used to really be fatal to people his age. So, if he does fine out of it and comes back and is able to do rallies, isn’t that exactly the same?”
However, Reid seemed to reconsider her comparison shortly after making it. “I mean it’s not exactly the same, it’s not the same incident, it’s an elderly man coming out of an illness,” she clarified.
Reid was joined by former Biden White House press secretary Jen Psaki, who has been a part of MSNBC since May 2022.
Psaki agreed with Reid’s take, adding, “It should,” according to a video of the segment.
Reid also suggested that Biden could use his COVID-19 diagnosis as a way to remind Americans of the dangers of the virus and highlight the struggles the nation faced during the pandemic.
“Here is a great messaging opportunity for President Biden to bring out the tape and remind people of how many people died; a million people are no longer with us,” she said.
“People’s grandmas were dying alone with their iPads. A great opportunity and messaging opportunity should the White House choose to take it.”
Reid recounted an incident during the 2016 RNC in Cleveland, Ohio, where she felt threatened by men acting menacingly.
She expressed concern over the increasing political violence, saying, “The idea of political violence that we’ve been nursing really since then, is so dangerous. It’s so dangerous that you cannot avoid the consequences of it, even if you’re one of the people promoting it.”
Biden, who was in Las Vegas for a speech to a Latino advocacy group, quickly returned to his Delaware vacation home upon learning of his COVID-19 diagnosis. He landed at Dover Air Force Base around 10:30 pm local time and assured reporters that he was “doing well.”
As the 2024 presidential race heats up, Biden and Trump find themselves in vastly different positions.
Biden is facing calls from within his party to step aside for another Democratic candidate, especially after a poor debate performance last month. Meanwhile, Trump’s popularity among Republicans has surged, particularly following the shooting incident that injured his right ear.
