As she navigates her next steps following President Trump’s dramatic return to the White House, Harris is weighing her options with input from family, friends, and trusted advisers, according to New York Magazine.
Clinton holds a unique perspective as the first woman to win the Democratic presidential nomination and the first female candidate to claim a popular vote victory. Harris etched her own place in history as the nation’s first female vice president and the second woman to lead the Democratic presidential ticket. Both women share the distinction of having been defeated by Trump.
The connection between the two runs deeper than their shared experiences on the campaign trail. Harris’ sister, Maya, played pivotal roles in both women’s political careers, serving as a senior policy adviser to Clinton and chairing Harris’ unsuccessful 2020 presidential campaign.
In the immediate aftermath of her loss, Harris publicly vowed to “stay in the fight,” though she has yet to clarify what that commitment entails.
According to New York Magazine, Harris’s conversations with confidants reportedly suggest that she is reluctant to close the door on a potential 2028 presidential campaign. For Harris, the path forward remains uncertain. Her three most likely options, political insiders believe, are a gubernatorial run, another presidential campaign, or stepping away from electoral politics altogether.
Returning to the Senate, where she once represented California, is unlikely since both seats are currently occupied.
Public records from Harris’ 2024 campaign reveal the formation of Pioneer49 LLC in California, a nod to her Secret Service codename and her historic position as the 49th vice president.
Should she pursue public office again, she will need to contend with the lingering shadow of her 2024 defeat—a challenge reminiscent of Richard Nixon’s trajectory. After losing the 1960 presidential election and a 1962 bid for California governor, Nixon rebounded to win the presidency in 1968.
Harris’ 2024 campaign was an uphill battle from the outset. President Biden’s abrupt withdrawal in July thrust her into the top spot with just 107 days until Election Day.
Biden, now 82, later suggested in an interview with USA Today that he might have secured victory had he stayed in the race. “It’s presumptuous to say that, but I think yes, based on the polling,” he remarked.
