The former president is set to publicly announce his pick for VP soon. But as of now, only true insiders know who Trump is leaning towards.
And Republicans have come to blows with Donald Trump over this running mate decision.
Former President Donald Trump is expected to officially reveal his running mate at the Republican National Convention in mid-July.
But there’s one problem with the timing of his announcement.
The July 11 sentencing for his hush money trial will only happen just a few days prior to the convention.
And that means Trump could receive a prison sentence by Judge Juan Merchan, the judge who presided over the trial, for his guilty conviction.
Lara Trump, the co-chairwoman of the Republican National Committee and the daughter-in-law of Donald Trump, has explained that the former president will be nominated as the Republican nominee for president even if he’s in a jail cell.
“It doesn’t matter whether Donald Trump is in Trump Tower, Mar-a-Lago, or anywhere else they may try to put him,” she stated.
But other Republicans are worried that if Trump doesn’t pick his running mate before the July 11 sentencing, GOP voters won’t have a second option to look to should the former president be sentenced to prison.
Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk is one of those Republicans who wants Donald Trump to pick his VP before the sentencing and before the convention.
“July 11 is going to go down as one of the most consequential days in American history. We have no idea what’s going to happen,” Kirk said to Secrets.
“We must contemplate the worst where Judge Merchan could say, ‘Oh 34 counts? Rikers Island right now,’ and no one would stop him. You could do that right there. Donald Trump could be thrown off and sentenced to prison.”
Kirk is in favor of Trump picking Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) as his running mate.
It is reported that Trump and his campaign are considering Vance, as well as Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Sen Tim Scott (R-SC), Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), and Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND).
Legal experts have stated that they don’t see Donald Trump getting a prison sentence since he’s a first-time offender and didn’t commit a violent crime.
But others are worried that because of the corrupt justice system, Trump could easily be handed a harsh sentence that includes jail time.
Former Trump advisers, Steve Bannon and Peter Navarro were recently sentenced to prison, leaving supporters of the former president worried that he may face the same fate.
Kirk and other Republicans bring up a good point that it’s good for Donald Trump and his team to be prepared for the worst.
And if that means picking his running mate a few days earlier than planned, then so be it.
