RINO Republican gets hit with a massive election loss that changes everything

Rep. Tony Gonzales

The GOP needs true America-First conservatives. They don’t need more establishment shills.

And now this RINO Republican got hit with a massive election loss that changes everything.

Gonzales’ Scandal-Plagued Runoff Bid Exposes Leadership Failures

Embattled Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) narrowly advanced to a May 2026 GOP primary runoff in Texas’ 23rd Congressional District after failing to secure over 50% in the March 4 primary, a result overshadowed by a lingering s-x scandal involving a former staffer who later died by suicide.

The controversy has prompted calls for Gonzales’ resignation from fellow Republicans, including Reps. Lauren Boebert, Anna Paulina Luna, and Cory Mills, who have questioned his fitness to serve amid allegations of misconduct that critics say reflect poor judgment and a disregard for professional boundaries.

The allegations stem from reported text messages obtained by the San Antonio Express-News, showing Gonzales allegedly pressing Regina Santos-Aviles, his former Uvalde regional district director, for intimate photos and engaging in s-xually explicit conversations.

In one exchange, Santos-Aviles reportedly responded, “This is going too far boss.” She allegedly confided to another staffer in texts: “I had an affair with our boss and I’m fine. You will be fine.”

Multiple sources, including a former employee and another staffer, confirmed to outlets that Santos-Aviles described the relationship as romantic and s-xual in nature. Gonzales has denied wrongdoing, insisting “there will be opportunity for all the details and facts to come out” and refusing to resign, stating, “I work everyday for the people of Texas.”

Tragic Suicide Amid Fallout Raises Serious Questions

Santos-Aviles, a married mother of one, died by suicide in September 2025 after setting herself on fire in her Uvalde backyard, suffering burns to nearly 100% of her body, according to the Bexar County Medical Examiner.

The tragedy occurred months after her husband reportedly discovered the alleged affair, leading to emotional distress and severed communication from Gonzales.

While the House Ethics Committee has launched an investigation into potential s-xual misconduct in his office—finding “substantial reason to believe” an affair occurred—Gonzales has accused Santos-Aviles’ husband of blackmail attempts and dismissed much of the reporting as politically motivated smears.

The timing and severity of the scandal have fueled perceptions that Gonzales prioritized personal indiscretions over the responsibilities of office, contributing to his underwhelming primary performance and forcing a rematch against challenger Brandon Herrera.

Herrera Capitalizes on Outrage, Calls for Party Unity Behind Challenger

Gun rights activist and YouTuber Brandon Herrera, who advanced alongside Gonzales, seized on the controversy to rally support, tweeting: “Gonzales CANNOT win this race. TEXAS 23 MUST RALLY BEHIND HERRERA!” He further declared the runoff an opportunity to “remove two of the worst Republicans from DC,” framing Gonzales’ survival as emblematic of establishment tolerance for ethical lapses.

Herrera’s campaign has highlighted endorsements from conservative figures urging Gonzales to drop out, arguing the incumbent’s baggage makes him vulnerable in a district that demands strong, uncompromised representation.

With the runoff looming and the Ethics probe ongoing, the episode underscores broader frustrations within the GOP base over incumbents who appear to evade accountability for personal failings while holding public trust.

Gonzales’ refusal to step aside despite mounting pressure and the tragic circumstances surrounding the allegations has only intensified scrutiny on his leadership.
