Life on Capitol Hill can be unpredictable. But this wasn’t on anyone’s radar.
And this congressman just committed treason against his own party that left them in chaos.
Republicans in the U.S. House are currently working to impeach Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
Their impeachment efforts are due to Mayorkas’ dereliction of duty involving the southern border crisis that has produced a mass influx of illegal aliens into the U.S.
But the articles of impeachment that were filed by the House, may be the farthest Republicans get in this process, as one GOP representative is planning to oppose the plan.
Republicans only have a small majority in the House, so they need every vote possible to impeach Mayorkas.
Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) however, is planning on voting “no.”
Buck isn’t running for reelection this year and is a “solid” no on voting for the impeachment of the DHS secretary despite the fact that he believes the secretary is “terrible” and that the border is a “disaster.”
The Colorado Republican’s believes Mayorkas’ issues and the state of the border aren’t enough for him to be impeached.
And Buck’s decision could also influence other Republicans like Rep. Tom McClintock (CA) who isn’t quite sure which way they’ll vote on this issue.
The two articles of impeachment that were brought forth against Mayorkas, claim that he has “willfully and systemically refused to comply with Federal immigration laws” and has “breached the public trust” by lying.
They also claim that the secretary has “knowingly” gotten in the way of the DHS trying to lawfully oversee the border crisis.
Next week could be the House vote on the articles of impeachment. And if Republicans get enough lawmakers to vote “yes,” then it will be the first time since 1876 that a secretary from a presidential cabinet has been impeached.
However, if the articles make their way to the Senate, it’s doubtful that they’d progress any further as that chamber of Congress is controlled by the Democrats.
“I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to do the right thing, put aside the politics, and agree that before we can fix Secretary Mayorkas’ mess, Congress must finally hold this man accountable,” House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green (R-TN) said.
Not surprisingly, Democrat members of the House have deemed this impeachment process as a “political stunt.”
The Biden White House has even labeled it as “unconstitutional.”
Mayorkas believes these are “false accusations” that are being lobbed at him.
But unfortunately for Republicans and Americans suffering from the border crisis, there looks to be some members of the GOP – like Rep. Buck – who are willing to bail the DHS secretary out.
