Health crises can hit at a moment’s notice. But this news had everyone stunned.
And a top Democrat receives a scary diagnosis from their doctor.
U.S. Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) made an announcement on Tuesday that he has been diagnosed with cancer.
Grijalva, who serves on the House Natural Resources Committee, issued a statement which explains how he went to get treatment several weeks back for a “persistent cough which was initially diagnosed as pneumonia.”
However, more testing revealed that the 76-year-old congressman has cancer.
“This diagnosis has been difficult to process, but I am confident in the vigorous course of treatment that my medical team has developed, and I’ve begun my journey to fight this cancer,” Grijalva’s statement continues.
He did not go into detail on the type of cancer he’s been diagnosed with, but he did make note that his office will remain open during this time so that his constituents can still be served.
“I am in regular communication with my staff and I continue to work as I undergo treatment. It is a privilege to serve as a Representative for the people of Arizona and I take this responsibility very seriously,” Grijalva said.
U.S. Rep. and current Senate candidate Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) took to X to offer support for Grijalva.
“My thoughts & prayers are with [Grijalva] and his family during this difficult time.”
“As a fighter for AZ and the natural wonders of our state, Raul is an inspiration to me and so many. I wish him the best in this cancer fight and hope to be working with him again soon.”

Grijalva also added in his statement announcing his diagnosis, that he is “grateful to my family, friends, and doctors for their support, and I am working hard to get healthy and return to business as usual as soon as I am able.”
“I appreciate your consideration, well wishes, and respect for my family’s privacy during this time. My heart goes out to others struggling with cancer, and I wish everyone strength in their fight.”
His announcement comes at a time when the U.S. House’s split among the Republicans and Democrats is very thin.
Republicans have just a slight majority, but a number of members from both parties have decided to retire early, making the majority in question as we head into the 2024 elections.
Not only that but there are other members of the lower changer of Congress who have fought health battles such as cancer recently.
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) and Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) have both battled the horrid disease, with Scalise recently returning from his battle this year.
