The witch hunt against Donald Trump continues. And no one associated with him is safe.
Now this top Trump official was arrested in an alarming attack on the former president.
On Monday, Supreme Court Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. denied Trump White House advisor Peter Navarro’s bid to remain out of jail while appealing his conviction.
Navarro is due to go to a federal jail in Miami on Tuesday to begin completing a four-month prison sentence for contempt of Congress, which he was convicted of last year.
He declined to speak or assist with the Jan. 6 committee investigating the circumstances surrounding the former president’s challenge to the 2020 election results.
Steve Bannon, another Trump White House official, was also convicted and sentenced to four months in prison, but he has been allowed to remain free while his appeal is ongoing.
Judge Carl Nichols, a Trump appointee, permitted Bannon to remain free.
Navarro stated that the president invoked executive privilege, which prevented him from cooperating with the congressional committee.
However, Judge Amit Mehta, an Obama appointment, ruled that Navarro could not use that argument at trial because he failed to demonstrate that Mr. Trump had truly asserted the privilege.
Navarro worked as Trump’s trade counselor.
Navarro’s counsel had argued to the top court that he was unlikely to escape in order to keep him free during the appeal.
“For the first time in our nation’s history, a senior presidential advisor has been convicted of contempt of Congress after asserting executive privilege over a congressional subpoena,” read his filing with the high court.
Meanwhile, the federal government argued to the Supreme Court that even if Navarro had claimed executive privilege, his “total noncompliance” with the subpoena would not have been justified.
Regardless of where you stand on Navarro’s actions, you have to admit that it is unprecedented to throw former presidential advisors into jail.
Especially when there is an active appeal.
But you have to remember that there is a two-tiered justice system in this country.
Hillary Clinton can delete her emails off her private server and get a slap on the wrist.
Dr. Anthony Fauci can lie about COVID-19 and vaccine effectiveness and get multi-million dollars worth of speaking events and book deals.
They don’t ever get what they deserve from the legal system.
Why? Because we’re a banana republic.
