No one is quite as good at commanding an audience like former President Donald Trump. If his personality didn’t demand attention like it does, he likely wouldn’t be back trying to get a second term in the White House in the most unprecedented way ever.
A part of what comes along with his ability to command attention is a following that actually trusts him. Say what you want about Donald Trump and maybe he never gets a second term in the White House. But you can’t claim that he doesn’t have a seriously dedicated fan base. One unlike any “politician” in modern America has ever seen since Ronald Reagan.
When Donald Trump gives his opinion about someone or something, his fan base takes that into serious consideration and his opinion moves needles. This is why his endorsements have been so impactful during election cycles.
Now Donald Trump’s made a major endorsement in a 2024 U.S. Senate race that is predicted to be razor-thin close when the dust settles this November.
During a Tuesday campaign rally, former President Donald Trump announced his official endorsement of businessman Eric Hovde and his bid for the Wisconsin Senate seat in Congress.
Probable Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has regularly aided Republican primary contenders by endorsing them, which has helped several of them win their individual primaries. As the state is seen as a “battleground” that is essential to his 2024 campaign plan, Trump endorsed Hovde, the CEO of Sunwest Bank, to challenge Democrat Sen. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin in the 2024 race.
“He’s a man who’s doing really good…he’s just about even in the polls, I see it. He’s a handsome devil…U.S. Senate candidate Eric Hovde,” Trump said of Mr. Hovde during his campaign speech.
Trump emphasized how important a win for Eric Hovde is for the Senate make up by adding, “Eric, I am giving you my complete and total endorsement, so go out and win. You’d better win. We always win.”

On February 22, Hovde declared his support for Trump’s presidential bid. The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), the Republican Party’s Senate campaign wing, has endorsed Hovde’s candidacy. The NRSC encouraged Hovde to run after two sitting House Republicans hesitated to run for the seat and take on incumbent Baldwin.
Hovde had previously run for the Senate in 2012 facing Baldwin’s predecessor, Democrat Senator Herb Kohl of Wisconsin. However, he was defeated by former HHS official Tommy Thompson in the GOP primary during that cycle. Thompson was then defeated by Kohl. According to outlet WisPolitics, Hovde has raised over $1 million since declaring his campaign.
The expense of simple living, illegal immigration into the US, healthcare, and foreign policy have been the main campaign topics for Hovde.
“We have always been a nation of immigrants, but the American Dream should be pursued legally through the appropriate channels. The Biden-Baldwin open border policy is fueling a crisis on our southern border and many people have lost their lives because of it. Our laws need to be enforced and our borders strengthened if we want to keep our streets safe and protect the lives of U.S. citizens and migrants,” the Hovde campaign has shared on his website.
Hovde has received the support of former Republican Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin as well as every Republican member of the Wisconsin House of Representatives. He faces off against two other, less well-known contenders in the GOP primary.
Hovde, however, is still trailing former Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke in speculative polls. Clarke has yet to announce his candidacy but has made suggestions that he may. The Republican primary for Wisconsin’s Senate seat is set for August 13.
Trump’s support for Hovde might give his campaign a big polling boost. A Michigan Information & Research Service poll shows that following Trump’s endorsement of former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers in the 2024 Senate campaign for Michigan, Rogers’s lead grew to 67%, a 40 percentage point rise.
Donald Trump’s endorsement of Hovde may discourage Sheriff David Clarke from announcing a bid for the U.S. Senate seat from Wisconsin, but there’s been no reports from those close to Clarke on the matter.
