Politics can be a stressful job. It takes a toll on the body.
Now a key Republican was rushed to the hospital with a scary diagnosis.
Alabama Governor Kay Ivey Hospitalized Following Minor Lung Procedure
Alabama Governor Kay Ivey, 81, was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday after undergoing a minor medical procedure to address fluid buildup pressing on her lung. Her office described the situation as non-emergent, with the governor choosing to address it promptly to allow a quick return to her duties.
Details of the Procedure and Current Status
The fluid was discovered after Governor Ivey reported discomfort on her left side for approximately three weeks, along with recent shortness of breath.
Following a visit to her primary care physician, she was referred for evaluation at Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery.
Doctors identified the fluid accumulation, and the procedure to remove it was successfully performed on Tuesday afternoon.
Governor Ivey is now being monitored at the hospital for the next several days as a precautionary measure. Her spokeswoman, Gina Maiola, provided the following update:
“While it was not emergent, Governor Ivey wanted to get the procedure done as soon as possible so she can quickly get back to 100% to wrap up the 2026 Regular Session.”
Maiola added that the governor’s office remains in contact with her, and Ivey has expressed determination for a speedy and full recovery. The exact length of her hospital stay and recovery period has not been specified.
Background and Context
This development comes as the Alabama legislative session enters its final days. Governor Ivey has a prior history with lung-related health issues; in 2019 she underwent radiation treatment for a small, localized spot of lung cancer, with her office reporting in 2020 that follow-up scans showed no evidence of disease.
As the state’s long-serving Republican governor, Ivey continues to focus on completing key legislative priorities. Officials have emphasized that her condition is stable and the procedure was routine in nature.
Updates on her progress are expected in the coming days as she works toward resuming her full schedule.
Wishes for a swift recovery have been extended from across the political spectrum, reflecting the governor’s dedication to public service in Alabama.
