Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently voiced strong concerns about the need for more robust content moderation on social media platforms, warning that without such measures, society risks losing “total control.”

Speaking with CNN’s Michael Smerconish on Saturday, Clinton emphasized the importance of federal action to address the growing influence of social media, particularly when it comes to protecting children from harmful content.

While some states have made strides in regulating social media, Clinton believes these efforts need to be expanded at the national level. “We can look at the state of California, the state of New York, I think some other states have also taken action,” she said. “But we need national action, and sadly, our Congress has been dysfunctional when it comes to addressing these threats to our children.”

Clinton made a strong case for putting this issue at the forefront of legislative agendas, advocating for the repeal of Section 230 of the Communications Act. Section 230 currently shields social media companies from legal liability for third-party content posted on their platforms. Clinton argued that this legal immunity, initially granted because platforms were seen as neutral “pass-throughs,” is outdated and overly simplistic in today’s digital landscape.

“We should be, in my view, repealing something called Section 230, which gave, you know, platforms on the internet immunity because they were thought to be just pass-throughs, that they shouldn’t be judged for the content that is posted,” Clinton explained. She added that companies like Facebook, Twitter/X, Instagram, and TikTok must be held accountable. “If they don’t moderate and monitor the content, we lose total control,” she stated.

According to Clinton, stripping these companies of their legal immunity would pave the way for implementing proper “guardrails” to regulate content more effectively.

In addition to her views on social media, Clinton addressed another hot topic: cellphone use in schools. She praised efforts by states such as Florida and California, as well as various school districts across the country, for limiting or banning the use of phones during school hours.

“Take phones out of schools,” Clinton urged. “I’m so happy to see schools beginning to do that, where the kids turn their phone in when they walk in the door.” She noted that this policy shift has had positive effects, with students becoming more engaged in class and more socially interactive during lunch breaks. “They are talking to each other in the lunchroom, things that used to be part of your daily life when you were a child in school,” Clinton remarked.

In a separate appearance on MSNBC last month, she suggested that Americans who spread “propaganda” in favor of former President Trump to interfere in elections should face civil or even criminal charges.

These comments show just how willing she is to shut down free speech by referring to it as propaganda so that people will become more in favor of banning it.

Hillary Clinton’s Need For Control

Hillary Clinton wants everyone to think she cares about children and what they view on social media. And while that may be important to her, what’s really important to her and the Left is being able to monitor speech.

Democrats for years now have been arguing that the First Amendment isn’t absolute. They feel as though hate speech should not be allowed.

But that’s not what the Founding Fathers envisioned. Speech, no matter how hateful, should always be free. Why should we let the government determine what’s hateful and what’s not? If the government had the ability to do that, particularly a government controlled by Leftists, they’d make certain speech punishable by law like misgendering someone who identifies as a transgender man or woman.

This is why Hillary Clinton and other Leftists like her want to make sure they can shut down free speech on social media. It’s so they don’t “lose total control,” like Clinton said in her recent interview.
