Donald Trump can’t believe it. This is the news he was waiting for.

And a new report hits President Trump’s desk that left him with a giant grin on his face.

Trump’s Second-Term Approval Starts Strong, New Poll Shows

A majority of Americans approve of President Donald Trump’s performance in the opening weeks of his second term, according to a newly released CBS News and YouGov survey.

The poll, conducted last week, found that 53% of respondents support Trump’s efforts so far, while 47% disapprove.

“That’s a better approval number than he ever reached during his first term in the White House,” said Margaret Brennan of “Face the Nation.”

Delivering on Campaign Promises

One key factor behind Trump’s positive numbers appears to be his ability to follow through on his campaign commitments.

“He’s doing, in the eyes of the public, what he said he would do in the campaign. There is political value in that,” Anthony Salvanto, executive director of elections and surveys for CBS News, said on “Face the Nation.”

According to the poll, 70% of respondents believe Trump is staying true to his campaign promises, while 30% say he is not. Words frequently associated with Trump during his campaign—such as “tough” and “energetic”—remain prominent descriptors among the majority of Americans.

“As people take a look in these first few weeks, there’s been a lot of activity, they’re getting that general sense of governance, and that’s being reflected in these early numbers,” Salvanto explained.

Mixed Views on Policy Decisions

While overall approval remains strong, public opinion on Trump’s specific policies is more divided.

59% of Americans approve of the administration’s program to deport undocumented immigrants, while 41% disapprove. 64% support the deployment of U.S. troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, with 36% opposed.

Americans are also split on the use of large detention centers for processing deportations—48% are in favor, while 52% oppose.

As for the Israel-Hamas conflict, Trump’s approach to the crisis has the backing of 54% of Americans, though 46% disapprove. And only 13% of respondents see Trump’s idea of a U.S. takeover of Gaza as a “good idea,” while 47% oppose it and the rest remain uncertain.

Economic Concerns Linger

Despite Trump’s strong early approval, economic worries persist. The poll shows that 66% of respondents believe he is not focused enough on reducing prices, while 31% say his attention to the issue is appropriate and 3% think he is doing too much.

Meanwhile, tariffs on Chinese goods enjoy majority support, whereas penalties on imports from Mexico, Europe, and Canada have less than 50% approval.

The poll also highlighted a division over the level of influence billionaire Elon Musk and his DOGE task force should have on U.S. government agencies and spending.

CBS News conducted the survey with a “nationally representative” sample of 2,175 adults. The margin of error is plus-or-minus 2.5%.
