The GOP is riding high after their historic victories in the 2024 elections. But now everything is coming crashing down.
As this Trump resignation news has the Republican Party sounding the alarm.
Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of President-elect Donald Trump, has announced her resignation as co-chairwoman of the Republican National Committee (RNC).
She shared the news in a Sunday night post on social media, marking the end of her tenure following a pivotal election year for the GOP.
“Serving as the @GOP co-chair throughout the course of the most consequential election in American history has truly been the honor of my life,” Lara Trump wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
“At the RNC, we had three distinct goals: 1) surpass all fundraising records, 2) build the largest army of lawyers and poll watchers to ensure election integrity and, 3) turn out millions of Americans and low propensity [sic] voters during early voting.”
She continued, “We accomplished all three. The job I came to do is now complete, and I intend to formally step down from the RNC at our next meeting.”

Lara Trump assumed the role of RNC co-chair in March 2024 alongside Michael Whatley, the former chair of the North Carolina Republican Party.
The pair succeeded Ronna McDaniel, who had led the committee for eight years but faced criticism over declining party performance and fundraising during her final months in office.
Under Trump and Whatley’s leadership, the RNC saw a dramatic resurgence. They revamped the GOP’s voter outreach efforts, which had stagnated under McDaniel, and prioritized fundraising.
In McDaniel’s last full month at the helm, the RNC brought in $10.6 million. By March, that number surged to $65.6 million and hit $76 million in April, according to reports from the Associated Press.
The impact of their leadership extended beyond fundraising. In the 2024 election, Republicans outperformed expectations, securing victories that many political analysts deemed unlikely. Donald Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential race, Republicans gained a majority in the Senate, and the GOP retained control of the House.
Lara Trump’s role in these successes has been widely praised. When Harris replaced Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee, Trump was one of the first to predict that initial excitement over Harris’s candidacy would not last.
“This whole thing has been smoke and mirrors, and it’s the same folks in the mainstream media, by the way,” she said to Fox News host Laura Ingraham this past summer.
“I will remind everyone who a few months ago, were suggesting that maybe Joe Biden wanted to choose a new running mate. Maybe Kamala Harris was a bit of a drag on the ticket. Now, we are all supposed to believe she is this political genius. You cannot believe what you are seeing out there.”
Her decision to step down has sparked speculation about her future in politics. Rumors suggest that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis could appoint her to replace Senator Marco Rubio, who is expected to be confirmed as secretary of state in President-elect Trump’s administration.
For now, Lara Trump’s departure marks the conclusion of a transformative chapter for the RNC, one that saw the Republican Party regain significant momentum under her and Whatley’s guidance.
The GOP now has to figure out a way to keep this momentum going as they move forward into the next set of election cycles.
