And Donald Trump bashed this star athlete with a hilarious comment.
President Trump settled one of the longest-running arguments in sports on Friday with the kind of plain talk that drives his critics crazy.
When the subject of basketball came up at the White House, he made his choice clear and then added a sharp observation that no one else in the room was willing to say out loud.
The timing could not have been better. LeBron James had just announced that he will spend his final two seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Fox News White House reporter Peter Doocy asked the president who was the greatest of all time between Michael Jordan and James.
Trump responded with an answer that was very characteristic of himself.
“Well, Michael Jordan’s a guy that’s a friend of mine. I golf with him. He’s a really good guy,” he said.
That simple statement already put him on the side of the six-time champion who dominated the 1990s and still commands respect from almost every corner of the game.
Then came the part that will dominate the coverage for days:
“I think LeBron is maybe he’s a racist, but maybe he doesn’t like Trump. I don’t know. But I only like people that like me, so I would say Michael Jordan all the way.”
In those few sentences the president cut through years of carefully managed media narratives.
Jordan has stayed largely out of the political mud. He has never made a career out of attacking the sitting president or lecturing the country about its supposed sins.
Trump treats him the way he treats most people who treat him with basic respect.
James, by contrast, has spent years inserting himself into progressive causes and has repeatedly bashed President Trump.
Trump noticed the pattern and refused to pretend otherwise. He does not reward people who spend their time tearing down the country or the man the voters chose to lead it.
