Politics can be a dirty business. And this politician is about to find that out the hard way.
And this Republican could be out of a job after Congress made a startling announcement.
Infighting within political parties isn’t a new concept.
It’s been happening since the birth of our nation.
But now it’s reached an ugly turn in the Republican party.
Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) has publicly expressed his disapproval with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).
This disapproval has especially heightened with the threat of the government shutdown which was narrowly avoided over the weekend.
In an interview on CNN, Gaetz expressed his intentions to oust McCarthy as speaker.
“I think we need to rip off the Band-Aid. I think we need to move on with new leadership that can be trustworthy. Look, the one thing everybody has in common is that nobody trusts Kevin McCarthy. He lied to Biden. He lied to House conservatives,” the Congressman said.
“Kevin McCarthy’s goal was to make multiple contradictory promises to delay everything back up against shutdown politics and at the end of the day, blow past the spending guardrails he had agreed.”
But not all Republicans are on board with Gaetz’s plan.
In fact, some of them are looking to oust Matt Gaetz himself.
“No one can stand him at this point. A smart guy without morals,” an anonymous Republican legislator said.
The House Ethics Committee is currently investigating Gaetz for any ethical wrongdoing.
This investigation has been ongoing since 2021 and is based on allegations of violating campaign finance laws, drug use, and accepting bribes.
If the committee comes back with any sign of wrongdoing by Gaetz, then some Republican members of Congress will look to expel the Florida Congressman.
This would ultimately hurt the GOP as a whole, since their majority in the House is already extremely thin.
But regardless, Gaetz has not done well to make any new friends through his latest feud with McCarthy.
It will be interesting to see if the ethics committee has enough evidence to seek his expulsion in the coming weeks.
