Kamala Harris is ready for her bid to be the next U.S. president. But her chances may have hit zero after this news dropped.
And the Harris 2024 campaign burst into flames after Trump catches them in this scandalous act.
The Trump campaign has accused Vice President Kamala Harris of orchestrating the “largest campaign finance violation in American history.” In a formal complaint to the Federal Election Commission (FEC), the campaign claims Harris is attempting to use political donations made to President Biden.
“Kamala Harris is seeking to perpetrate a 91.5 million dollar heist of Joe Biden’s leftover campaign cash — a brazen money grab that would constitute the single largest excessive contribution and biggest violation in the history of the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971,” Trump campaign general counsel David Warrington wrote in the complaint to the FEC.
The complaint targets Harris, Biden, Biden’s principal campaign committee (recently renamed Harris for President), and the committee’s treasurer.
It characterizes the effort to repurpose Biden’s remaining campaign funds for Harris as “fraudulent” and a “mockery of our campaign finance laws.”
Warrington asserts that federal campaign finance law provides no provision for Harris to take over Biden’s candidacy and control his campaign simply by amending forms filed with the FEC.
He argues that Harris is ineligible to receive Biden’s war chest as she didn’t file a statement of candidacy to designate Biden for President as one of her authorized committees.
The complaint describes Harris as a “separate individual candidate competing for the Democratic Party’s nomination,” deeming the transfer of funds a “massive excessive contribution from Biden for President” to the vice president.
“The Commission must immediately find reason to believe and quickly end this ongoing violation,” Warrington concludes in his letter.
Responding to the accusation, Harris campaign spokesperson Charles Lutvak labeled the complaint as “baseless.”
“Team Harris will continue to build on our more than 250 coordinated offices and more than 1,300 coordinated staffers across the battleground states – just like we built on the $240 million cash on hand that we had at launch this week, raising $100 million in our first 36 hours and signing up 58,000 volunteers,” Lutvak stated.
“Republicans may be jealous that Democrats are energized to defeat Donald Trump and his MAGA allies, but baseless legal claims – like the ones they’ve made for years to try to suppress votes and steal elections – will only distract them while we sign up volunteers, talk to voters, and win this election,” he continued.
A Harris campaign official also asserted that Biden’s fundraising committees have always been authorized committees for both the president and vice president, and only the name has changed.
FEC Chairman Sean Cooksey, a Trump appointee, told NPR that the “unprecedented” nature of Biden handing Harris the keys to his campaign funds might prove “complicated” and lead to legal challenges.
“I think it’s gonna have to go through a process, through the FEC,” Cooksey explained. “I expect, there’s probably going to be challenges to that at the agency, and probably in the courts as well.”
However, former Democratic FEC Commissioner Dara Lindenbaum believes Harris is entitled to the campaign funds. “It’s quite clear, Vice President Harris can continue using the campaign committee and its funds,” Lindenbaum told The Hill.
If Harris does not secure the Democratic nomination or is deemed ineligible to receive the funds, the money could be sent to the Democratic National Committee or a super PAC associated with the eventual nominee.
An Associated Press survey of delegates indicates that Kamala Harris currently has the support of enough delegates to win the nomination.
