President Donald Trump delivered a heartfelt eulogy for the late South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham on Tuesday, celebrating his longtime friend and ally’s unwavering hawkish foreign policy views before a packed cathedral filled with mourners, foreign dignitaries, and colleagues from across the political spectrum.
Trump Reflects on Graham’s Unshakable Conviction
During the eulogy at the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Trump reflected on Graham’s foreign policy legacy, telling mourners, “He had unwavering faith in the righteousness of American power and prayer. He was extremely hawkish; he never saw a war he didn’t like. He did it for the good of our country; he felt in his bones that our destiny is to win. His job was to do everything he could to ensure our enemies would lose.”
The remarks, which drew moments of laughter from attendees, underscored Trump’s admiration for Graham’s decades-long commitment to American strength abroad. The president noted that this conviction drove Graham to serve 33 years in the Air Force before continuing his military career in the Air Force Reserves and Air National Guard, even while serving in the Senate, ultimately attaining the rank of Colonel. Trump added that the same conviction took Graham to “almost every country on earth,” where he confronted America’s adversaries and stood by its allies.
World Leaders and Colleagues Gather to Pay Respects
Roughly 1,600 people attended Graham’s funeral, including South Carolina Republican Attorney General Alan Wilson and Salem Radio Network host Scott Jennings. The service began with the hymn “How Great Thou Art,” moving into songs from the Cathedral Choir and tributes from Trump, Fox News host Sean Hannity, and Graham’s niece, Emillie Boggs Roberts.
The funeral in the nation’s capital drew world leaders including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, both of whom held closed-door meetings with Trump just hours before the service.
Hannity Praises Netanyahu’s Presence, Honors Trump’s Support for Israel
During his tribute, Hannity pointed to Netanyahu’s presence with his wife at the funeral, saying Graham would have been “blown-away” by the Israeli leader’s effort to attend, adding that Graham “loved” Netanyahu, the state of Israel, and the Israeli people. Praising Netanyahu, Hannity said that under his leadership, “Israel has been one of America’s most consistent and loyal allies,” adding that Graham was “never shy to say it to the day he passed.”
Hannity then turned his praise to the president, saying, “And just as President Trump has been Israel’s strongest friend in the history of the White House.”
Graham’s Senate colleagues present at the service included Republican Majority Leader John Thune, Sen. James Lankford of Oklahoma, and Democrat Sens. Chris Murphy of Connecticut and Ruben Gallego of Arizona. The funeral also featured readings from Reverend Franklin Graham, son of the late Reverend Billy Graham, Reverend Tony Perkins, and Marjorie Jones Dannenfelser — a lineup reflecting Graham’s deep ties to the conservative movement across faith, foreign policy, and pro-life advocacy circles.
