Harris has just recently been thrust into the national spotlight. Biden wants to pass the torch to her.
But she got smacked with devastating news that is sinking her 2024 bid for president.
Several high-profile Democratic donors are hesitant to support Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign, doubting her ability to defeat Donald Trump due to her perceived left-leaning stance.
John Morgan, a major donor, expressed his reluctance on X just hours after President Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 race.
“You have to be enthusiastic or hoping for a political appointment to be asking friends for money. I am neither. It’s others’ turn now,” Morgan wrote.
Morgan, a Florida personal injury lawyer, went on to say, “The donors holding the 90 million can release those funds in the morning. It’s all yours. You can keep my million. And good luck,” referencing a group of party donors who recently declined to use their funds for Biden’s faltering campaign.
Morgan had previously contributed $1 million to the Biden-Harris campaign.
Morgan’s reaction to Biden’s endorsement of Harris was blunt: “Joe Biden’s endorsement of Kamala is his f–k you to all who pushed him out. Be careful what you wish for.”
He hinted at preferring a more centrist Democrat:
“Any combination of these people win,” and named Sen. Joe Manchin, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro. He also suggested that former First Lady Michelle Obama would win “in a landslide with any of these picks.”
This criticism spells trouble for Harris’ campaign, which has been aggressively courting donors and key allies since Biden’s announcement.
Other significant Democratic donors also favor a contested convention to determine who could best defeat Trump, suggesting Harris may not be strong enough to be Biden’s successor.
Vinod Khosla, a Democratic donor and tech investor, wrote on X, “I want an open process at the convention and not a coronation. The key still is who can best beat [Trump] above all other priorities given how much a danger he is.”
Mega-donor Reed Hastings also questioned Harris’ electability.
Speaking to the New York Times, Hastings said, “We have hope now. Dem delegates need to pick a swing state winner. Thank you, Joe Biden.”
While Harris has secured numerous endorsements from key Democrats, top figures like former President Barack Obama, ex-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Leader Chuck Schumer have yet to endorse her.
Nonetheless, her campaign announced that she raised $49.6 million in the half-day following Biden’s endorsement.
Harris has three weeks to convince donors and delegates that she is the best choice to replace Biden on the ticket before the Democratic National Convention votes for its official presidential nominee.
Despite this, she appears to be the frontrunner, with potential challengers like California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Shapiro, and Beshear already endorsing her.
