DeSantis Criticizes Media for Bias in Coverage of Trump’s Criticisms of Newsom
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently delivered a sharp rebuke to reporters over what he sees as biased coverage of President-elect Donald Trump’s criticisms of California Governor Gavin Newsom. Trump has taken aim at Newsom, a Democrat, over what he describes as mismanagement in the face of California’s ongoing wildfire crisis. DeSantis suggested that the media’s response would be vastly different if Newsom were a Republican.
“It’s inappropriate for people in your industry to try to create division and to try to create narratives anytime these things happen,” DeSantis said in response to reporters pressing him for his views on Trump’s statements.
The Florida governor went on to highlight what he perceives as a double standard in media coverage. “Now you’re not as interested in doing that, because Newsom is a D[emocrat]. If Newsom was a Republican … you would have him nailed to the wall for what they’re doing over there. And I know we know that. We just assume in Florida, anytime something happens, it’s going to be politicized by the media,” he said.
DeSantis accused the media of having a poor track record when it comes to politicizing crises, offering an example from his own experience as governor. “I remember when we had the Surfside tower collapse, I had people from the Washington Post trying to blame me for it immediately, without having any facts or anything,” he stated. He contrasted this with what he described as a lack of scrutiny directed at Democratic leaders during crises.
“That mayor of L.A., if that were a Republican mayor, I could only imagine what that would do. I mean, you know the fires are at high risk, and you try to go to Africa or wherever she was, to go on some type of voyage,” he said, referring to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. “You should have been there preparing and doing that. And yet, I don’t see a lot of heat being directed in that thing.”
DeSantis concluded with a call for fairness in media coverage. “I’d like to see some balance on how this is done. You can criticize the president-elect but I think we also have to hold these other people accountable, and I have not seen that,” he said.
🚨 HOLY SH*T. Governor Ron DeSantis just absolutely torched this reporter and came to Trump's defense when they attacked Trump over the criticism of Gavin Newsom. This may be his best moment yet.

Trump Calls Out Newsom Amid Wildfire Crisis
Meanwhile, Trump has launched a series of scathing attacks on Newsom via Truth Social, accusing the California governor of incompetence in handling the state’s wildfires. Trump claims Newsom’s refusal to address water management issues has exacerbated the crisis.
“Governor Gavin Newscum refused to sign the water restoration declaration put before him that would have allowed millions of gallons of water, from excess rain and snow melt from the North, to flow daily into many parts of California, including the areas that are currently burning in a virtually apocalyptic way,” Trump wrote.
“Now the ultimate price is being paid. I will demand that this incompetent governor allow beautiful, clean, fresh water to FLOW INTO CALIFORNIA!” Trump continued, calling on Newsom to resign and take immediate action.
“He is the [sic] blame for this. On top of it all, no water for fire hydrants, not firefighting planes. A true disaster!” Trump added.
The ongoing wildfires, including the Palisades Fire — which has consumed over 20,000 acres with only eight percent containment — have caused widespread destruction.
At least 24 lives have been lost at the time of writing, thousands of homes have been destroyed, and many residents have been displaced.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has directed affected residents to seek assistance online, though her actions have also drawn criticism.
As the crisis unfolds, Trump’s fiery rhetoric and DeSantis’s critique of media bias highlight the increasing politicization of disaster management and the scrutiny—or lack thereof—that leaders face depending on their political affiliations.
