Virginia School District Stands Firm on Transgender Policy Despite Federal Warning
A school district in Virginia is standing by its transgender policy, maintaining that it will not inform parents if their child starts identifying as a different gender—even though the Trump administration has issued a warning that schools promoting gender ideology could be stripped of their federal funding.
Albemarle County Public Schools in Charlottesville sent an email to parents earlier this month, reminding them of its policies regarding transgenderism and anti-racism. The district’s transgender policy specifies that students are “not required to obtain parental consent” to change their name and pronouns at school. Teachers and staff are expected to “honor” the student’s request without notifying parents unless the student specifically asks them to do so.
“School administration will not contact a student’s parents in relation to such a request unless asked to do so by the student,” the policy states.
Dr. Daphne Keiser, Assistant Superintendent for School Community Engagement, emphasized the district’s commitment to inclusivity in the email. “Recent events have highlighted the importance of standing together against bullying, harassment, and discrimination,” she wrote.
Federal Warning and School Response
Last month, President Donald Trump signed an executive order warning that schools promoting concepts such as Critical Race Theory or gender ideology could see their federal funding revoked. Another executive order mandates that schools allowing trans-identifying males to compete in girls’ sports could also face funding cuts.
Despite this, Albemarle County Public Schools has reiterated its commitment to its transgender policy. However, the district acknowledges that if parents of an underage student become aware of their child’s gender identity change and oppose it, the school will follow the parents’ wishes while also offering “resources” on gender identity.
“It is not unusual for a child’s desire to transition to first surface at school,” the policy explains.
The policy also outlines that some students may make the “personal decision” to pursue medical interventions such as puberty blockers, cross-s*x hormones, or transgender surgeries.
Accommodations for Trans-Identifying Students
According to district guidelines, trans-identifying students are permitted to use the bathrooms and locker rooms corresponding with their gender identity and to participate on sports teams of the opposite gender.
“Although some students may feel uncomfortable with a gender-expansive student using the same s*x-specific facility, that discomfort is not a reason to deny access to the gender-expansive student,” the policy says.
For overnight school trips, trans-identifying students “must be permitted” to participate according to their gender identity. Privacy concerns are considered on a case-by-case basis, but staff are instructed not to require trans-identifying students to stay in single-occupancy accommodations unless all students are given the same requirement.
Additionally, school employees receive training on fostering a “more gender-inclusive environment” within the curriculum. The policy document also includes terminology related to gender ideology, such as “cisgender,” “gender-expansive,” and “agender.”
Parental Concerns and District Silence
Some parents in the district have expressed strong concerns about the school’s approach. One mother, who spoke to The Daily Wire, said she was unsettled by the district’s email.
“I am very concerned and disturbed by the audacity of public school administrators casually informing parents (via mass email with an attached 10-page PDF) that they are purposely uninformed about their children’s access and exposure to transgender ideology,” she said.
Additional Policy Initiatives
Along with its transgender policy, the district also addressed immigration concerns in its email, encouraging families worried about immigration enforcement to contact the district. The email included a link to an “immigration resources” page on the district’s website.
The district has also maintained an anti-racism policy since 2019. A FAQ document published by the district includes a question asking, “I don’t believe I am racist. Can I still perpetuate racist behavior?” The district’s response:
“Yes, while a person can strive to overcome bias and prejudice, actively working to recognize and help to dismantle structures and practices that intentionally and/or unintentionally disadvantage historically marginalized people is a much more complex goal.”
Radical ideologies in schools across the country, specifically the ideology of transgenderism, is exactly what the Trump administration is targeting. Time will tell if these unruly school districts will adhere to President Trump’s executive order on transgenderism or not.
