China is the United States’ most powerful adversary on the world stage.
While the Russian economy has contracted and its military has suffered heavy losses over the past year in Ukraine, China has been solidifying its power.
Not only does the Chinese economy rival the U.S., but they are also rapidly expanding their military and influence abroad.
In fact, most developing nations in Africa, home to some of the most precious resources available, are in debt to the Communist regime.
And now that they are showing their muscle, they’re going far beyond anything they’ve ever done before.
The Chinese state has made headlines over the past few days for its blatant disregard of American airspace through a spy balloon hovering over the country.
According to US authorities, a suspected Chinese reconnaissance balloon gadget was detected traveling above the US this week and is currently being followed.
Pentagon spokesperson Brigadier General Pat Ryder said that the United States “has detected and is tracking a high altitude surveillance balloon that is over the continental United States right now.”
“We continue to track and monitor it closely,” Ryder said. “Once the balloon was detected the U.S. government acted immediately to protect against the collection of sensitive information.”
“The balloon is currently traveling at an altitude well above commercial air traffic and does not present a military or physical threat to people on the ground,” Ryder also said.
The Wall Street Journal reports that National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and other top defense officials briefed President Joe Biden on the situation on Wednesday.
Officials reported that Biden requested that the balloon be shot out of the sky after people spotted it from a commercial jet. Because of the possibility of civilian casualties, the Pentagon was opposed to such an action.
After passing over the Aleutian Islands and over Canada, the balloon was spotted above Billings, Montana, on Wednesday. According to NBC, a top defense official stated that the device is still above the country but did not specify where it is.
Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin convened top military officers to discuss how to respond to the balloon, deciding against proposing a kinetic take-down owing to the potential danger to those below. On Wednesday, they presented the several reaction scenarios to Biden.
“Currently we assess that this balloon has limited additive value from an intelligence collection perspective over and above what the PRC can do through other means,” the senior defense official said, per NBC News. “Nevertheless we are taking all necessary steps to protect against foreign intelligence collection of sensitive information.”
The military will keep an eye on the device and will consider taking it down, according to the official.
“We are tracking it in minute detail in real-time and we will constantly update our assessment,” the official said. “We are in constant surveillance of this thing through a bunch of different means.”
The insider further stated that the US is certain that the device is Chinese and has informed the Chinese government “through multiple channels both here in D.C. and in Beijing.”
While this has happened in the past, the official claims that this time is different because the gadget is staying over the country for longer than usual.
