And now the Trump admin scored a major hostage release that sends shockwaves worldwide
Trump Administration Delivers Another Win: American Hostage Freed from Taliban
In a clear victory for President Donald Trump’s tough-on-hostage-diplomacy approach, Afghanistan’s Taliban regime has released 64-year-old U.S. citizen Dennis Coyle after holding him without charges for more than a year.
Coyle, an academic researcher who had spent nearly two decades in Afghanistan legally supporting local language communities, was seized from his home in Kabul by Taliban intelligence in January 2025 and subjected to near-solitary confinement.
Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs Adam Boehler confirmed the good news: “The United States welcomes the release of American citizen Dennis Coyle, who was wrongfully detained in Afghanistan for more than a year.”
Boehler credited President Trump’s personal determination and firm stance, stating: “President Trump made clear: the United States will not tolerate the unjust detention of its citizens — anywhere. His personal determination — executed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and a fully aligned interagency team — has driven a shift to accountability, pressure and results.”
Strong Leadership Yields Results Where Others Failed
Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised the release as “a positive step by the Taliban” while making clear the U.S. will not accept hostage-taking as policy. Rubio noted: “President Trump is committed to ending unjust detentions overseas – Dennis joins over 100 Americans who have been freed in the past 15 months under his second term in office.”
He added that the administration continues pressing for the return of remaining Americans, including Mahmood Habibi and Paul Overby, and thanked the United Arab Emirates and Qatar for their assistance.
This success comes after the Trump administration designated Afghanistan a “state sponsor of wrongful detention” last month and applied sustained pressure on the Taliban.
Coyle’s freedom adds to an impressive tally: the administration has already secured the release of 176 individuals, including more than 100 Americans, from wrongful detention worldwide — from Venezuela to hostages held by Hamas in Israel.
Trump’s No-Nonsense Policy Brings Americans Home
Coyle’s family expressed relief as he heads home, highlighting the human cost of the Taliban’s unjust actions.
Boehler emphasized the broader commitment: “We will not accept hostage diplomacy. We will impose consequences. Americans remain detained abroad. We will not stop until every single American is home.”
President Trump’s decisive leadership — rejecting weakness and demanding accountability — is once again proving effective in protecting U.S. citizens abroad.
While challenges with the Taliban persist, this latest release demonstrates that a strong, results-oriented America-first approach delivers real outcomes for American families, restoring hope and reinforcing that no regime can hold our people indefinitely under this administration.
