Donald Trump’s policies are coming into form. This is a victory he desperately wanted.
And this latest deal out of the Trump admin has Republicans jumping for joy.
Trump Unveils Landmark Trade Agreement with Vietnam
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump revealed a groundbreaking trade agreement with Vietnam, marking a significant step in reshaping economic ties with the nation, which ranks as America’s seventh-largest trading partner and a key manufacturing powerhouse.
“It is my Great Honor to announce that I have just made a Trade Deal with the Socialist Republic of Vietnam after speaking with To Lam, the Highly Respected General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam,” Trump shared on Truth Social, emphasizing the deal’s potential to foster mutual growth.
“It will be a Great Deal of Cooperation between our two Countries. The Terms are that Vietnam will pay the United States a 20% Tariff on any and all goods sent into our Territory, and a 40% Tariff on any Transshipping.”
This agreement follows Trump’s earlier trade strategy outlined on April 2 during his “Liberation Day” address, where he introduced “reciprocal” tariffs, initially setting a steep 46% tariff on Vietnamese goods. To facilitate negotiations, he temporarily lowered this to a 10% baseline.
The newly announced terms reflect a shift, with Vietnamese exports now facing higher tariffs than during the negotiation phase, aligning with Trump’s push for equitable trade practices.
In a historic concession, Vietnam has agreed to unprecedented market access for American goods. “In return, Vietnam will do something that they have never done before, give the United States of America TOTAL ACCESS to their Markets for Trade,” Trump stated.
“In other words, they will ‘OPEN THEIR MARKET TO THE UNITED STATES,’ meaning that, we will be able to sell our product into Vietnam at ZERO Tariff. It is my opinion that the SUV or, as it is sometimes referred to, Large Engine Vehicle, which does so well in the United States, will be a wonderful addition to the various product lines within Vietnam.”

This deal is part of an effort by Trump to secure economic agreements before a July 9 deadline for implementing his reciprocal tariff framework. Recent negotiations have also yielded preliminary trade understandings with China and the United Kingdom, though these await finalization.
In April, Vice President JD Vance laid out a “roadmap” for a potential trade deal with India during a visit to the region, signaling an ambitious global trade agenda.
The tentative U.S.-UK agreement maintains a 10% baseline tariff on many British goods but exempts cars, steel, and aluminum from larger 25% rates. Discussions with London include opening UK markets to American meat and ethanol, though specifics remain under negotiation.
Similarly, the interim agreement with China has dialed back steep tit-for-tat tariffs, paving the way for a more comprehensive deal, with Beijing committing to greater market access for U.S. products.
Trump remains steadfast in his commitment to his reciprocal tariff policy, emphasizing its simplicity and fairness. “It’s so simple,” he stated.
“We’re sending letters out … saying, ‘Congratulations, we’re going to allow you to trade in the United States of America. You’re going to pay a 25% tariff or 20% or 40 or 50%.’”
While he has signaled flexibility in adjusting some rates, Trump shows no intention of delaying the implementation of these tariffs, emphasizing his resolve to prioritize American economic interests.
This agreement with Vietnam, alongside ongoing talks with other global partners, reflects a dynamic approach to trade that seeks to balance open markets with protective measures, positioning the U.S. for stronger economic influence worldwide.
