We thought the battle lines had been drawn. They’re changing faster than you think.
And now stunning dropout news just shook the 2024 presidential race to its core.
Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made a desperate attempt last week to secure a meeting with Vice President Kamala Harris, proposing to drop out of the 2024 race and endorse her in exchange for a potential cabinet position.
However, Harris, 59, showed little to no interest in Kennedy’s overtures, and the Washington Post reported Wednesday that she hasn’t even considered his offer.
“From the beginning of this campaign, we were saying people should be talking to each other,” Kennedy told the outlet.
“That is the only way of unifying the country.”
Despite his diminishing relevance, the 70-year-old candidate insisted that ignoring his proposal would be a “strategic mistake” for the Harris campaign.
“I think they ought to be looking at every opportunity,” he added, seemingly overestimating his influence.
“I think it is going to be a very close race.”
A spokesperson for Kennedy suggested he might even take his pitch to former President Donald Trump, signaling his willingness to align with anyone who would entertain his fading ambitions.
“Mr. Kennedy is willing to meet with leaders of both parties to discuss the possibility of a unity government,” the campaign official told The Post.
Reports indicate Trump, 78, met with Kennedy in Milwaukee last month during the Republican National Convention, possibly hoping to capitalize on Kennedy’s dwindling support.
The Harris campaign, however, did not even bother to respond to The Post’s request for comment.
Kennedy’s campaign, once showing a brief surge with 15% support last November, has since collapsed, with a Fox News poll released Wednesday showing him clinging to just 6% support.
The same poll highlighted that Kennedy siphons more support from Trump than Harris, with 9% of Trump voters willing to switch to Kennedy compared to just 7% of Harris supporters.
To add to Kennedy’s woes, an Albany court ruled Monday that he would not appear on New York ballots in November, citing that he does not actually reside at the Westchester County address he provided in election filings.
This ruling, prompted by a lawsuit from a super PAC supporting President Biden, not only blocks Kennedy from New York ballots but also jeopardizes his status in other states where he listed the same address.
Kennedy, whose campaign is now entangled in legal battles, lamented his isolation from the Democratic Party.
“The only contact I have with the DNC is them suing me through intermediaries,” he said.
