Gov. DeSantis is all-in on helping Donald Trump. He’s not going to let anyone get in his way to accomplish this.
And the Democrat Party is on fire thanks to what DeSantis just gave to Trump.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) has declared his state ready to spearhead President-elect Donald Trump’s forthcoming deportation program. Addressing reporters from Florida’s Capitol, DeSantis announced a special legislative session set for the week of January 27, emphasizing his commitment to aligning state and local efforts with the federal agenda.
“Today, I called for a special session of the Florida legislature the week of January 27 to prepare Florida to lead on the Trump Administration’s deportation program,” DeSantis stated Monday. He pledged his administration will “allocate resources and ensure state and local officials in Florida are supporting these efforts.”
DeSantis emphasized urgency, stating, “We have no time to waste. Florida must lead.” He added that during the session, the legislature will also tackle other state issues, including “ballot initiative integrity, disaster relief, and condominium regulations.”
The governor also highlighted the need for accountability in enforcing anti-sanctuary policies, ensuring Florida does not provide incentives for undocumented immigration. “There also needs to be measures to hold people accountable who are violating our anti-sanctuary policies,” DeSantis said. “Florida needs to make sure that we don’t have any lingering incentives for people to come into our state illegally.”
Anticipating swift action from the federal level following Trump’s inauguration, DeSantis laid out his strategy: “We’re going to have some time to process to make sure we’re doing what we need to do, but then we need to act and we need to act quickly.”
DeSantis framed immigration as a top priority, reflecting the concerns of voters in the 2024 election.
“The American people spoke very clearly,” he said. “This issue of the border and illegal immigration was one of the top issues in the 2024 election, and has been one of the top issues that we’ve had in this country for many, many years. So it will require new legislation in Florida to ensure that the duties of both state and local officials are very clear, and that those duties require them to be assisting the federal government in this regard. Now the state, we’re going to do it, because I’m going to order that the state does it.”
To support these efforts, DeSantis plans to request funding from the legislature, noting that enforcement will improve “overall public safety.” He cited recent hurricanes in Florida where looters—many of whom were undocumented immigrants—were arrested. “They had looters in Pinellas County. I think it was like 45 of them that were arrested over a period of time, and I think 40 of them were in this country illegally,” DeSantis recounted. “How the hell is this happening? On the heels of a natural disaster, you’ve got people here without authorization, and they go out and try to loot the place. Give me a break.”
The governor emphasized the importance of deporting undocumented individuals involved in criminal activity, saying it would help improve public safety beyond immigration enforcement.
DeSantis also warned of consequences for officials who refuse to comply with deportation mandates. “Now, the accountability is significant, and those duties are clear in the law, I have the authority to suspend them from their office if they are neglecting their duties. That’s a that’s an authority that I have when it’s been appropriate in the past,” he stated.
Reflecting on Florida’s legislative actions, DeSantis highlighted the implementation of mandatory E-Verify in 2023 as a critical step in discouraging illegal immigration.
He noted that Florida’s crackdown on hiring undocumented workers—once criticized—has not harmed the state’s economy. Instead, Florida’s incredible economy has proven critics wrong.
“FL’s best-in-the-nation legislation combatting illegal immigration generated the typical array of false media narratives,” DeSantis said last month.
“That such narratives blew up shows that good policy pays dividends. The goal needs to be disfavoring illegal immigration rather than—as is common across the U.S.—incentivizing more illegal immigration.”
As Florida prepares to take the lead on immigration enforcement, DeSantis remains steadfast in his vision, calling on state lawmakers and officials to act decisively in helping Donald Trump achieve his goal of cracking down on illegal immigration.
