Trump is standing up for the United States. He isn’t letting anyone take advantage of us.
And this foreign country is panicking after what President Trump just threatened them with.
President Donald Trump is standing up for American farmers once again, firing off a stark warning to Mexico about their blatant disregard for a long-standing water treaty that’s affecting Texas. With the clock ticking toward the end of the year, Trump isn’t messing around—he’s demanding action now or face the consequences.
In his latest post on Truth Social, the president laid it out plain and simple. “Mexico continues to violate our comprehensive Water Treaty, and this violation is seriously hurting our BEAUTIFUL TEXAS CROPS AND LIVESTOCK,” he declared, highlighting the real pain felt by hardworking Texans.
Trump didn’t stop there, pointing out the massive debt Mexico has racked up. “Mexico still owes the US over 800,000 acre-feet of water for failing to comply with our Treaty over the past five years.”
The president set a clear deadline for Mexico to start making good on their promises. “The US [sic] needs Mexico to release 200,000 acre-feet of water before December 31st, and the rest must come soon after,” he stated, emphasizing the urgency for our farmers who can’t afford more delays.
But with no response from south of the border, Trump is ready to hit back hard.
“As of now, Mexico is not responding, and it is very unfair to our US Farmers who deserve this much needed water. That is why I have authorized documentation to impose a 5% Tariff on Mexico if this water isn’t released, IMMEDIATELY.” This is classic Trump—putting America first with tough economic pressure.
He wrapped up his message with a final call to action. “The longer Mexico takes to release the water, the more our Farmers are hurt. Mexico has an obligation to FIX THIS NOW,” Trump said.
This isn’t some new gripe; Texas farm organizations sounded the alarm last year about a potential catastrophe for crops like citrus and sugar.
As diplomats from both sides scrambled to sort out the mess tied to the 1944 treaty, American growers were left hanging, desperate for the irrigation water that’s rightfully theirs.
Tensions over this agreement have boiled over before, but the recent drought has pushed things to the brink—the worst shortages in almost three decades.
Back in April, the Trump team hammered out a breakthrough deal with Mexican officials to secure vital water flows for Texas. This came hot on the heels of Trump’s public blast at Mexico for hoarding water promised under the treaty.
The agreement locked in commitments from Mexico to release water from their international reservoirs and boost supplies from six tributaries feeding into the Rio Grande. It’s supposed to hold through the end of the current five-year cycle, giving U.S. farmers some breathing room.
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins praised the move as a major win
At its core, the 1944 Water Treaty spells out fair shares for both sides. Mexico pledged to send 1.75 million acre-feet of water over five years from the Rio Grande River, ensuring Texas doesn’t go dry.
In return, the United States committed to providing Mexico with 1.5 million acre-feet of water from the Colorado River. It’s a straightforward swap that should benefit everyone—if both parties stick to it.
Yet Mexico has repeatedly dropped the ball, causing brutal water deficits in the Rio Grande Valley. Ranchers and farmers are paying the price, watching their livelihoods evaporate.
These ongoing failures have devastated local economies, wiping out crops, slashing jobs, and putting entire communities at risk.
Trump’s tariff threat is a wake-up call to protect our own before it’s too late.
