As Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has emerged as vice-president pick for the Democrats, his long-standing and unusual relationship with China demands scrutiny. Walz’s connections to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) raise serious national security concerns, especially considering his potential future role as second in command of the United States.
While Walz and his supporters try to paint his ties to China as benign, the facts tell a much more troubling story.
Walz’s Early Enthusiasm for China
Walz’s fascination with China began in 1989 when he visited the country under a now-defunct Harvard program called WorldTeach. The experience seemed to leave a profound impact on him, as he later described it as an “excellent experience” where he was treated with more generosity than he could imagine.
Upon returning to the United States, he spoke of China with an enthusiasm that bordered on obsession, even going so far as to hang a Chinese banner in his school office.
This early connection led Walz to bring American students on educational trips to China, a venture that would later become a full-fledged business, Education Travel Adventures Inc., which he founded with his wife.
They organized over thirty trips to China, with Chinese authorities reportedly covering a significant portion of the costs. The deep involvement of the CCP in these educational exchanges should raise alarms, as it’s unlikely the Chinese government would subsidize such activities without expecting something in return.
A Honeymoon Marred by Ominous Symbolism
Walz’s ties to China are not just professional but deeply personal as well. He and his wife chose to honeymoon in China, a decision that, on the surface, might seem innocuous. However, the timing of their marriage—June 4, 1994, exactly five years after the Tiananmen Square massacre—raises eyebrows.
The brutal crackdown on pro-democracy protesters by the CCP on that day resulted in thousands of deaths, yet Walz chose this date to commemorate his marriage. His wife later remarked that Walz “wanted to have a date he’ll always remember.” The symbolism of this choice is unsettling, to say the least.
The CCP’s Involvement in Walz’s Political Career
Walz’s connections to the CCP have continued throughout his political career. In January 2019, at his gubernatorial inauguration, a CCP diplomat and other Chinese government officials were in attendance.
This is an unusual occurrence for a state governor’s inauguration and raises questions about why the CCP would take such an interest in Walz’s political ascension. The CCP’s presence at this event and their congratulatory messages suggest a relationship that goes beyond mere diplomacy.
Moreover, after the inauguration, the same CCP diplomat met with Walz’s close associates at Minnesota Global, a non-governmental organization with deep ties to Walz. This organization, which has globalist leanings, has been involved in promoting friendly relations between Minnesota and China, further entangling Walz with the CCP.
A CCP Police Station in Walz’s Backyard?
One of the most alarming aspects of Walz’s connections to China is his association with the Chinese American Association of Minnesota (CAAM), an organization accused of housing a secret CCP police station in the Twin Cities.
These so-called “Overseas Chinese Service Centers” are believed to be intelligence outposts used to monitor and intimidate Chinese dissidents in the United States. Despite these allegations, Walz has done nothing to address the presence of this CCP outpost in his state, raising serious concerns about his willingness to confront China’s malign influence.
Speaking Engagements with CCP Influence Operations
In 2019, less than a year into his term as governor, Walz accepted speaking invitations from multiple CCP-backed events. These events were organized by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), an organization that the U.S. State Department has accused of malignly influencing state and local politicians.
Walz’s participation in these events, where he spoke about his experiences in China and Minnesota’s connections to the country, is deeply concerning. Why would an American governor so willingly align himself with a known CCP influence operation?
Walz’s Pro-CCP Comments
Walz’s public statements about China over the years have often been disturbingly favorable. He has described his trips to China as “one of the best things I have ever done” and expressed admiration for the Chinese people. He even praised China’s low crime rate, conveniently ignoring the brutal authoritarian measures the CCP employs to maintain control.
Perhaps most troubling are Walz’s comments on the Tiananmen Square massacre. On the twentieth anniversary of the event, Walz remarked that “every nation has its dark periods that it must come to grips with,” drawing a false equivalency between the CCP’s ongoing human rights abuses and historical events in the United States.
Walz’s willingness to downplay the CCP’s atrocities raises serious questions about his judgment and his ability to stand up to China on the global stage.
National Security Concerns
The cumulative effect of Walz’s long-standing and cozy relationship with China is a national security concern that cannot be ignored. His deep ties to CCP-backed organizations, his participation in influence operations, and his reluctance to criticize China’s human rights abuses all suggest that Walz may be compromised.
If Walz were to ascend to the Vice Presidency, these connections could pose a significant threat to U.S. national security.
In contrast to Walz’s troubling connections with China, former President Donald Trump and the Republican Party have taken a strong stance against the CCP. Trump’s administration implemented tough measures against China, including tariffs, sanctions, and a ban on Chinese technology companies that threaten U.S. security.
Trump’s approach to China was clear-eyed and unapologetic, putting American interests first and holding the CCP accountable for its actions.
The GOP’s focus on countering China’s influence, both at home and abroad, stands in stark contrast to the Democrats’ weak and often complicit stance.
Republicans have consistently pushed for stronger measures to protect American jobs, intellectual property, and national security from China’s predatory practices.
The party’s commitment to confronting China’s growing global influence is a key reason why voters should be wary of a potential Harris-Walz administration.
The American people deserve leaders who will stand up to China, not ones who are entangled with its communist regime.
