In a surprising acknowledgment, the Washington Post’s editorial board has confirmed that President Joe Biden’s inner circle took deliberate steps to hide his declining mental faculties throughout his presidency.
This revelation, which had been forcefully denied by Biden’s team—including Vice President Kamala Harris—during his time in office, has sparked significant debate in political circles.
The editorial, published Tuesday, follows Biden’s recent decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. While the piece mainly praised Biden for his “wisdom” and “profoundly selfless decision” to “surrender power” for the good of the Democratic Party, it confirmed longstanding concerns that Biden had exhibited cognitive struggles for some time.
His closest advisors, however, made concerted efforts to keep this from the public eye.
“The 81-year-old had shown signs of slipping for a long time, but his inner circle worked to conceal his decline,” the article revealed.
It went on to suggest that Biden and the country would have been better off had he upheld his implied commitment from the 2020 campaign to act as a “transitional” president, stepping aside after the Democrats’ unexpectedly strong results in the 2022 midterm elections.
The editorial also reflected that Biden “should not have sought reelection” in the first place.
Even with this admission, the editorial maintained that Biden’s decision to step aside was one of the most difficult calls of his long political career.
Despite his struggles, Biden’s decision to leave the race was falsely portrayed as the culmination of careful thought, ultimately prioritizing the Democratic Party’s future over his personal ambition.
This revelation echoes a Wall Street Journal report from June that outlined Biden’s challenges behind the scenes, a story that was initially downplayed by the media.
As Biden exits the 2024 race, under pressure from Democratic leaders after a poor debate performance against Donald Trump, the veil over his mental state has been lifted.
Leading up to this point, despite repeated assurances from his team about his mental sharpness, many Americans had questioned Biden’s cognitive health.
His withdrawal from the race triggered a rapid transition, with Vice President Kamala Harris stepping into the role as the Democratic nominee for president.
Meanwhile, new polling suggests that Americans remain skeptical about the administration’s transparency. A recent YouGov/Times survey revealed that a significant portion of the public believes Vice President Kamala Harris was heavily involved in the cover-up of President Biden’s health status.

In response to the growing controversy, Texas Republican Congressman Wesley Hunt has called for an investigation into whether White House staffers knowingly concealed Biden’s condition from the public.
Hunt warned that if such a cover-up occurred, it could represent “the biggest scandal in American political history.”
