Amazon succumbed to “pressure” from the Biden administration to “remove books” containing alleged “misinformation,” according to internal emails obtained by House Republicans.
On Monday, Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, unveiled a series of alleged images of email interactions by Amazon employees, nicknamed “The Amazon Files.”
Jordan chairs both the House Judiciary Committee and its Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government.
The conservative member said that the documents “indicate that [Amazon] bowed down to Biden White House pressure to censor” publications.
A March 2021 email with the subject “Pre-Brief for Meeting with the White House” President Joe Biden took office less than two months earlier.
“Hi all – here are the notes for our Pre-brief discussion with the White House today,” wrote the sender, an Amazon employee whose identity was redacted.
The email included “Talking Points (to be made affirmatively)” in the category “Books Curation and Guidelines 101.”
“Is the [Biden] [a]dmin asking us to remove books, or are they more concerned about search results/order (or both)?” He or she inquired, presumably as the first of these “talking points.”
Jordan claimed that this was evidence that the “Biden White House pressured Amazon to censor books.”

He went on to say that several of the books the administration was reportedly “concerned” about offered opposing opinions on the president’s response to the COVID virus.
At the time, COVID restrictions dominated Biden’s policy agenda.
“Andy Slavitt—the senior Biden White House official who demanded that Facebook censor a meme and true information—was pressuring Amazon at the same time,” Jordan noted in an email.
Tyler O’Neil, managing editor of The Daily Signal, explained that Slavitt was “then a senior adviser on Biden’s COVID-19 response team.”

Jordan also stated that one week before the unidentified Amazon employee submitted the aforementioned email, Slavitt “fired off” another email. Jordan wrote this in the communication to Slavitt:
demand[ed] to know who he and his White House colleagues could talk to at the company about “the high levels of propaganda and misinformation and disinformation of [sic] Amazon?”
Slavitt, a former investment banker and healthcare executive, formerly worked in the Obama-Biden administration. He never went to medical school.
