Schumer has had a rough time lately. His influence in the Democrat Party is quickly fading.
And Chuck Schumer fell flat on his face after this horrifying new report was released.
AOC Surges Ahead of Schumer in Stunning New York Poll
A new poll reveals that Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent “Squad” member, holds a commanding lead over Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in a hypothetical New York Democratic primary.
The survey, conducted by Honan Strategy Group for the Jewish Voters Action Network, shows Ocasio-Cortez, a 35-year-old socialist firebrand, outpacing the five-term incumbent 54% to 33% among likely Democratic voters in New York City.
The numbers are particularly striking among Jewish Democrats, where Ocasio-Cortez leads Schumer 45% to 33%, with 17% still undecided. “This is a massive wake-up call for Schumer,” declared Maury Litwack, co-founder of Jewish Voters Action Network. “He’s not only bleeding support in the Democratic Party overall but also in the Jewish community.”
For Schumer, a 74-year-old Jewish senator who has leaned heavily on Jewish voters throughout his 50-year career, the results signal trouble. With his next reelection not until 2028, the poll suggests growing discontent within his base.
Frustration with Schumer’s Leadership
Litwack argues the numbers reflect frustration with Schumer’s leadership more than enthusiasm for Ocasio-Cortez, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, which backs the controversial boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement against Israel.
Ocasio-Cortez has also stirred debate by labeling Israel’s response to the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks as “genocide.”
Litwack pointed to Schumer’s handling of rising antisemitism as a key factor. “The leading Jewish elected official in the nation did not step up in a moment of rising antisemitism — and the poll reflects that,” he said.
Critics, including Litwack, fault Schumer for failing to push through the Antisemitism Awareness Act when Democrats controlled the Senate and White House. The bill would have authorized the US Education Department to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism for civil rights investigations.
Controversies and Criticisms
Further scrutiny has fallen on Schumer over allegations—detailed in a House report on campus protests—that he advised Columbia University to downplay accusations of antisemitism. Schumer has firmly denied these claims.
Additionally, his public criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling for new elections in Israel during the Gaza conflict, drew ire from some Jewish voters. Litwack also noted that while Schumer authored a book on antisemitism, his actions have not matched his rhetoric.
Tensions with Fellow Leftists
Schumer’s challenges extend beyond his Jewish base. Liberal activists, already frustrated by Donald Trump’s return to the White House, criticized Schumer’s March vote for a six-month government funding bill.
Some called for new Senate Democratic leadership, seeking a more confrontational stance against Trump. Schumer defended his vote, warning that a partial government shutdown would have caused “devastation like we’ve never seen.”
The poll, conducted via phone text from May 15-18 with 1,136 Democrats, carries a margin of error of plus or minus 2.89 percentage points.
